Well I was bidding up stuff on ebay and accidentally got a gtx1080 for $400 :fear:

Seems like a pretty good buy performance/$ wise right now, according to my ebay tracking of prices and the latest TPU review for performance rankings...

I figure I can hock it in a year if I need to since it will still be a fast card... but I'm a little nervous because I've never bought something so close to a new gen's release. Something tells me the new xx80 will be 600-700+ and will be in short supply....

A GTX 1080 for 400$ seems like something decent.

While next gen might be stronger with its X80 and X70 SKUs, I'm afraid launch prices are going to be hella spiked.
I wouldn't be suprised if X70 first will be available for 500-550$ while offering GTX 1080Ti-like performance

If its vanilla, no not a good deal, if 3rd party design with custom pcb example Sapphire VaporX, then yes.

Eh, since nvidia's extreme regulations on voltages and power consumption I wouldn't care too much for the PCB, only the cooler.
I would say that FE GTX 1080 for 400$ today brand-new is a decent deal.

That's 320 euro so very good price if it was not used for mining ;)

That's a decent price for a 1080...there is still a long way to go till the new series 1180* and the price will be around 900$ if you ask me...so I would say this is a good buy if the card is in a good condition

Why should Nvidia launch a new mainstream card for 900 dollars MSRP. We're not talking Ti or Titan and GPU mining is "dead". It's regular x80 and x70 cards. If those prices are going to happen, it's because it will be a huge leap in performance.

I doubt new cards are "far away". Pascal/Paxwell is more than two years at this point (and was nothing but a shrink + tweak compared to Maxwell). Major Nvidia announcement at Gamescon in August. Consumer stuff. It's new cards for sure. Paperlaunch or not, we will know the facts.

I hope you're right :) I kind of exaggerated the price but I don't see the cards coming out earlier than half of September. I paid around 600£ for my 1080 4 months after the launch so I think the 1180 won't be under 700£

I wouldn't be surprised if x80 is $699 - if it beats 1080 Ti by 15-30%
Hopefully x70 will deliver 1080 Ti perf at $449ish

Prices will slowly drop tho.. Especially when the Ti is closing in, but I guess that card is late 2019..

I guess with all the cards that will be on the market (including the ex-mining ones) at the time of the launch of the 1180 and 70 they will have to be pretty good in performance/price ratio otherwise people won't be that interested in buying them

Yeah, obviously it has to beat 1080 Ti perf, which is priced at $700-800, not much competition from AMD :(

I'll be buying x80 ASAP. I have a buyer ready for this 1080 Ti. I don't expect huge performance gains tho. I hope it's 7nm/GDDR6.

Yeah, I thing I'll stick to my 1080 for a while...maybe if the price decreases along the line I will upgrade to an 1180 if I fell the need. Back to topic I don't think the 400$ for a used 1080 is that bad it depends on the condition of the card though

It's a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Windforce 3 OC (GV-N1080WF3OC-8GD), so aftermarket PCB and cooler. Glad you guys think it's a solid buy, it's for 1440p 144Hz where my sli 970s are not consistent.

1. canyou confirm card status when purchased, example: ebay claimed: open box, used, new item ?

2. for the price, is a solid buy if is a gamer's used card, open package, still in warranty or if it can be registered for warranty period, and if new item, is the best purchase according price you will ever made, why? cuz mining has f*cked us with video cards prices in the market,

3. the video card still excellent for gaming due its specs, is the nvidias top 3 or 4 in performance and power, is the current generation and will be a great card for at least 2 or 3 years more,

A much better investment than the two 970s and it will still last you at 1440p for a number of years. The issue is that it won't hold 96+ fps consistently in a lot of intensive titles (or ones that are CPU bound). My advisement is to ensure your CPU/RAM/Mobo combination is strong and somewhat modern before spending the money on a next gen GPU to replace the 1080.

If you play RTS, RPG, MMORPG, simulators, older games, indie games, Unity games and half of the steam Survival style games like 7 days or Savage Lands then a strong C/M/R + GTX 1080 is far more worthwhile than an aged C/M/R with a GTX 1080 TI, Titan and whatever is launching later this year.

My 2600 is a beast, however it gets bogged down by CPU intensive programs and the DDR3 RAM doesn't cut it any longer.

Yeah it's an open box, supposedly used one time and returned in May 2018. Hoping to install it tonight.

How high do most 1080s overclock? My old 970s were great at OCing, +20% or so no problem

I have a 7700k at 5ghz and ddr4-3200, so no worries on my "C/M/R"

Pascal cards don't really suffer too hard from mining... especially not 1080s as they work best on the relatively low stress equihash algos.

Even if it has been mining like nuts, as long as it is in working order it's not a BAD buy...

Frankly, all things considered, I would prefer a mining card - assuming it is not from the Chinese floods. The prime reason is that they are often underclocked and undervolted. While utilization is high, actual stress is much lower.

Not sure where you are located but new 1080s can be had for about $500. It certainly isn't a bad buy but it certainly isn't a steal either. Enjoy the card!

Software Gentoo Linux x64
Frankly, all things considered, I would prefer a mining card - assuming it is not from the Chinese floods. The prime reason is that they are often underclocked and undervolted. While utilization is high, actual stress is much lower.

That's all true but fan bearing wear is real. Probably the biggest fear I have from a former mining card is that they ran it above 75% fan speed it's entire life and the fan is nearly shot. That does not affect electronic condition and can be fixed, but definitely something to consider...

Indeed, fan bearings do not die silently.

So far so good on this 1080, card was totally free of dust and really did appear to be an open box item.

A buddie of mine bought a water blocked Nvidia 1080 for $500 euro's and is really happy on the performance. His card boosts to 1996MHz with no OC at all and only run's in the mid 30's

No that I think about it, I'm not that cartain. We might see nvidia launch the whole lineup this september, we've seen a 12GB GDDR6 +600mm2 "something" in pics. Therefore we might not see an 1180 hold the place for 1180Ti and get a pricecut later, we might see a 1180Ti launch early along with 1180 and 1170. If that is the case there might be a $350-400 card that blows that 1080 out of the water and a $500-550 one that smokes 1080Ti, while this top of the line 12 gddr6 600mm2 one will be +50% 1080Ti performance at least and might cost $700-750. TSMC has 7nm ready, 12nm is mature enoguh, I think there's no point for nvidia to drag the next gen release over two years. Drop them all at once in q3 18, then do a 7nm shrink in late 19.
