Recent price changes have put these two roughly £30 apart, what would you choose for both gaming and 3d/motion graphics?

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
7870, more vram, lower power consumption, great OCability...

Unless you can get the 580 for less $$ 7870 is a better bet.

Will do that in a few, but its basically, an fx8120 on an MSi 990fx gd65, and 8gigs vengeance, does it matter?

I always it because there will always be that person wanted to pair a brand new video card with hardware from 5 years ago. Either should work fine, it comes down to price and preference for you, fortunately.

Also, I was thinking more CPU, Motherboard, and PSU which tells us:
A: How fast is your CPU, what can it keep up with?
B: What is the layout of the motherboard? (More important if you decide to do crossfire/sli in the long run).
C: How large is your PSU, can it handle a 7870 or a GTX 580?

Keep in mind that you want to leave some headroom when it comes to powering a video card. When I first got my 6870 it recommended at least 500-watt and my 550-watt couldn't even get it to boot (not that running a 550-watt would have been a good idea,) but is definitely a consideration. That is why I asked.

Yeah, the sapphire 7870 is £30 cheaper, more inclined to that, but I'm upgrading from a 560ti and had started using cuss n physx... but the last two WHQL drivers brought too crashes so yeah

Oh, cool. The rig is powered by a coolermaster gx650. I'm actually upgrading from a gtx 560ti. But thanks

Definitely go for the HD7870, once OC'd it willl outperform the GTX580 in most games @ 1920x1080

The 650-watt PSU should be able to handle the 7870, I'm not sure about the GTX 580 though, it does eat a lot of power. Be careful over-clocking though, you're not leaving yourself a lot of overhead when it comes to power delivery by using 650-watts, even more so if your OCing your CPU as well.

I run my proc @3.8ghz(1.232v) 24/7, from the stock 3.1ghz and I don't think ill do more than 4.0ghz when I get a new cooler. Though I rarely ever OC my graphics card.
I'm pretty sure the PSU will feed the 580 easy

After the price drop on the gtx 570's i se no reason to get a 560Ti 448 sice there is almost or no price difference between them at all and 40nm cards eat lots of power compared to 28nm ones.

Yeah, this is true for the GTX580, but for the HD7870 i'd disagree. The 7870 (stock) including a X58 i7-965 pulls ONLY 274W, which leaves a huge amount of wattage to OC with, without even getting near the max PSU load. Compared to the GTX580 which will pull 400W+

http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-radeon-hd-7850-and-7870-review/7 - heres the Guru3D review for Power Consumption, and Hardware Canucks does a good graph against the GTX580's power consumption for comparison on their HD7870 review.

After the price drop

Price drop? Where?

@Huddo

I agree. Vsync the 7870 and your probly looking at 80-100W peak power on the card alone.

I see no reason why not, most if not all reviews that show overclocking, say/show that the HD7870 has a heap of OC'ing headroom and with barely any increase is heat output. Definitely something to consider in my opinion if you decide to delve into the HD7xxx series. :rockout:

GTx 570 used to be more than $300 now they are below that , 580's the same they are below $400 now.

Already ordered for the 7870, will push it to the furthest I can then the temps/noise vs performance gain will decide

when it's similar price, similar performance, go with the newer one. In that case the 7870. It will use less power, run cooler, have a longer shelf life, and have a longer time of driver support. (not that driver support will be an isse in the next few years)

What about drivers, so far the only issue I've heard against the HD7k series is driver crashes n eyefinity issues

Let me reiterate- unless if you already have a 5 series card or a 580 for that matter which you dont, go with the latest generation, and btw Majority of users here who have the cards are not having issues. Plus remember NV has them too.
