[SOLVED] GTX580 with 85° in idle

Hello everyone,

I have a secondary PC at work which I use for gaming during work breaks or testing new software since my company PC is locked down hard. Specs are on here. It has a reference design GTX580 from Zotac which I got out of a PC that had a leaking liquid cooler. Ventilation is good and I clean it every 2-3 months.

So far it has held up well, but when I wanted to game a bit in my lunch break today the fan spun up to what seemed to be 100%, and just as I wanted to shut down the game it switched itself off. Okay, I thought, another dead card. I then disassembled the card, cooled it down with cooling spray, cleaned everything, applied new TIM and put it back in.

Well, no artifacts and it still works. However, same problem as before, as in 85° when it sits idle on the desktop, and gaming will probably kill it. As far as I could tell there is a cap on the actual GPU. Maybe the TIM below the cap has come off the die?

Any way to fix it? It wouldn't be a huge loss or anything because free stuff is free, but a GTX580 is still somewhat powerful and my only free replacement would be an old GTX460.

See the attached screenshot for temps and fan speeds. I was toying with it a little, but bottom line is 85° in idle with ~60% fan speed.

Dust bunnies? Try cleaning the videocard with compressed air or paintbrush. Hold the fan down though

As I wrote in my opening post I have already disassembled it completely. I also blow through my system with compressed air every 2-3 months. I wish it would be that simple :)

When you say there is a cap on the gpu die, what do you mean? Is there something covering the gpu die other than the thermal paste?

Oh, okay. Learned something new I guess, I always assumed it was just a cap that had the function of protecting the die from too much mounting pressure, using TIM to bridge the gap.

Okay your gpu-z is crazy. Video load might be 0% but your voltage says 1.47v wtf? Never mind the 56 A???

Could this be virus or have you flashed any bios?

Somewhat unlikely because I only use that PC at work. I'm behind a network firewall, have an AV running and stay away from shady sites.

I didn't notice the voltages. I'll switch machines and have a look.

Ok, the obvious thing is perhaps the cooler isn't making good contact somehow. You seem to know what you're doing with dismantling it, so perhaps take a closer look to check it's making proper contact? Perhaps check out a video that shows one of these being taken apart to see if there's anything you missed?

Also, if 3D clocks are enabled while on the desktops, the card will run significantly hotter, but not 85C. Flash videos in your browser typically enable them. Try using MSI Afterburner to check the clocks.

You're right about this still being a powerful card. I've got one like it and it blasts through anything. In fact, two in SLI.

I had a look at Zotac's tuning software which I installed out of curiosity a while back and my voltage seems to be LOCKED at 1.6V. I am unable to decrease it. I never touched that setting though. In fact, all I did was see how much the fan speed profile could be influenced.

Maybe I should try to flash the card's BIOS? I never did that before, though.

There are no suspicious or new processes running.

Contact seems to be fine. I applied a new, thin layer of Arctic MX-4. Didn't lift it back up though because of air pockets, but it seemed to "swim" on the TIM, which is usually a good sign. The old TIM was spread very evenly, so I think there shouldn't be a problem.

Keep in mind though that the card was pretty wet due to a leaking water cooler. I assumed that it might have finally kicked the bucket due to that.

Well, I currently game on a 19" with 1.280 x 1.024, and the 580 is plenty for that :)

I did that and used Arctic MX-4. The image I posted is not my card.

Well, everything seems to be back to normal. I uninstalled Zotac Firestorm and the card returned to default. See the attached image.

Last week I bought a Zotac GTX770 AMP! for my private PC, and I wanted to see if I could modify the fan speeds with that software. Good thing I tried it on my secondary work machine first. Seems to be a horrible piece of software.

I am amazed though that the card survived this without permanent damage. Artifacts after POST usually mean that it is damaged beyond repair. Oh well, at least it now has new TIM.

Thank you for your assistance guys!

I have read about MSI's software a lot. Is it that superior to other manufacturer's tools? I had assumed that there would be SOME benefit to using the tool that your hardware vendor supplies.

Yes Well done!

Msi is preferred because they update it frequently and it's 99.8% stable ;)

Hope you have fun!

IF IT'S WORKING DONT FIX IT ;)

Software Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
I had a look at Zotac's tuning software which I installed out of curiosity a while back and my voltage seems to be LOCKED at 1.6V. I am unable to decrease it. I never touched that setting though. In fact, all I did was see how much the fan speed profile could be influenced.

Maybe I should try to flash the card's BIOS? I never did that before, though.

There are no suspicious or new processes running.

That voltage seems rather high, although I don't know the normal operating voltage of that GPU - try a google search to find out. Certainly don't flash the BIOS as that's likely to brick it, especially considering there's already a fault on the card. Anyway, if the BIOS had been corrupted, the card would have already been bricked.

EDIT: just seen your post saying all fixed. :)

Quick question... is there still a way to disable the intentional throttling for Furmark? The command line switch for GPU-Z doesn't seem to work for me (on Vista).

There is a way, just use another program, like MSI Kombustor or OCCT if you want to stress test ;)
