GTX690 getting spicy

So I nabbed a 690. Nice. Dual GPU for dual cpu kind of stuff.

Anyway. One core is running at about 98-99c and the other at like, 65. What's the best way to get the one down? I'm assuming getting better coolers for it or repasting, but that leaves me worried about thermal pads for the memory and/or VRM. Sure they're only 150w per GPU but I want to keep this thing cool. No liquid cooling btw.

That is spicy.. I would look at repasting for sure. I got lucky with my 980 in that the cooler lifts right off, and has some shielding over them mems so I didn't have to worry. Maybe you would be just as lucky? I haven't looked at the card though..

Doing a bit of digging, it seems like most sites either advised water or a single ARCTIC cooler (Accelero Twin Turbo 690). The sad panda moment is that that card is old enough, that the coolers seem to be EOL at this point.

I saw the cooler on ebay, but it says it is used ( ) and they want like $150 for them.

That's what I'm hoping. An easy fix that's either paste or coolers.

One way to tackle this would be to take the card apart just so much as here on the "cooler" picture, 3rd one 2nd row here, and place additional fans (80mm) on the front and the back coolers, connected to an external fan ctrlr. That should do it.
Probably it's the first GPU that's getting hot, but anyway - should work; BIOS editing nvidia's most conservative fan curve works too, but that one fan will work quite a lot to cool 300W (max.)...

You mean shroud off, extra fans? Not a bad idea... Also fan curve is maxed and still hitting that 98c.

So, pretty much a late version of a 9800 GX2, but a much later-generation arch and process. I've heard about those 9-series dual-GPU video cards before. Despite I described it sort of like a 9800 GX2, it probably would stomp a 9800 GX2.

Stuck a fan to it, now other gpu gets hotter. Hot core went from 98c to around 78c and cool went from 65c to 88c. Nifty.

LOL! Well all joking aside - put another fan on the other heat sink as I wrote above.

Edit: Of course the other core went up in temperature - but not because of the fan on the left heatsing but because of the fact that you removed the shroud that directs air from _original fan onto both heatsinks.
If you feel adventurous, you can try and test that by removing the fan on that left heatsing - and without the shroud to direct air, both cores will be significantly hotter, so don't actually do it.

Edit2: Also - with another additional fan, you do not need extreme fan curve anymore - factory one will suffice. Test it out. It'll be good - well depends on RPM of additional fans. I'd keep them around 2200 RPM, not higher.

I did add a second fan later, and still was hitting 92c. Guess paste time it is.
