Hey,

Just formatted the parents computer. And installed Windows 7 64bit, the same one i've used on my computer for the past few years.

- First format and install was fine. I launched IE and downloaded and installed Chrome and ATi drivers.
- Reboot and i see JUST the wallpaper, no GUI.

- Second format and install goes fine. I launched IE and downloaded and installed just the ATi drivers.
- Reboot and i see JUST the wallpaper, no GUI, again.

- Third format and install goes fine. I use Windows Update to install ATi drivers.
- Reboot and i see JUST the wallpaper, no GUI, again.

Now i'm scratching my head... Anyone ever had this before.

The graphics card is a proven to work HD5450.

Thanks

No GUI means no start menu and desktop icons? That usually means explorer.exe isn't running. Hit ctrl+alt+del, open the Task Manager, and see if explorer.exe is in the processes list. If not, go to File -> New Task and enter the following: C:\Windows\explorer.exe

Ctrl + Alt + Del just takes me to a black screen. Nothing happens. Then when i press Esc, it returns to the wallpaper.

Hmm nvm black screen...

only thing I can think is to strip the machine of any excess, use onboard video/sound, remove all add in cards, disconnect all but the primary hard drive/optical drive, try again. If it fails again dig out your trusty shotgun and show it you mean business.

Next time run a system image onto dual layer DVD or a separate partition that you can update after you have a fully installed stable system.

The build has been up for about a year. It's never had a hardware or software issue. I simply decided that it's time for a format, it was getting abit cluttered. And here we are.

There is no issue with the hardware or the Windows Disc.

I already use a 100GB partition for the OS.

Okay, WHAT THE FUCK.

Just got round to installing Windows 7 again. Loaded up fine. Went to the ATi site and got drivers 11.10 (which is what it was on before). Installed fine. Rebooted and bam, same fucking screen.

What the hell, guys.
