Guidance required - GPU-Z - Device ID and BIOS version

Hi All,

Hoping you might be able to help me get some clarity here, I regrettably have sold a high end GPU via E-bay and believe the buyer is trying to misinform me in order to gain and send me back a faulty GPU.

I recently sold a graphics card (ASUS TUF RTX 4090 GPU) via eBay. Prior to the sale, I thoroughly tested the card, conducted benchmarking, and confirmed it was in perfect working order. I also recorded video evidence of the card in operation and captured a screenshot using your GPU-Z software, clearly showing the Device ID and BIOS version.

The buyer has since contacted me, claiming the card is overheating. He provided a screenshot from GPU-Z to support his claim. However, upon reviewing it, I noticed that both the Device ID and BIOS version shown in his screenshot do not match those from my original GPU-Z screenshot prior to shipping.

When I asked the buyer about this discrepancy, he stated that the Device ID can change depending on the PC setup in which the card is installed. (which to me does not sound correct)

Could you kindly confirm:

Whether the Device ID or BIOS version shown in GPU-Z would change if a GPU is installed in a different PC system?

Or, do these values remain constant regardless of the system configuration?

Based on the information I have, I strongly suspect that the buyer may be testing a different GPU altogether, and not the one I sent him.

The information provided by the buyer does not correlate with my original GPU-Z screenshot (Photo A), which clearly shows a different Device ID and BIOS version.

would appreciate any clarification you can provide on this matter, as it would really help me get some clarity.

Please see my attached screenshot below (Photo A)_ details pulled prior to sending out the card to the buyer

The buyer has sent me his attached screenshot of GPU-Z report below (Photo B) attached.

After doing research online, I have been informed that the device ID is unique to the graphics card and is a unique identifier to the card and shows the card model number , vendor and version.

Really appreciate if anyone has any guidance on this matter.

Thanks

The device ID remains a constant unless another cards Bios has been force flashed onto your card which it appears it may have, some people flash another cards Bios when for example they want a higher power limit to gain more performance but in doing that there can be occasions where even if successful , the (lesser) cards cooling is struggling to keep it cool as it was not designed for the higher power draw, some can be fine .

The ID is unique to a specific model/revision, but not unique to an individual card like a serial number would be. Hardware changes do not randomly change a graphics card device ID.

Could also be a scammer, they could be trying to pass off a faulty 4090 as the one that they bought in order to get a working one for free in exchange for the faulty one, eBay tends to take the buyers in most cases of faulty items, not as described etc these days, I wouldn't risk selling anything of high value on there myself, also as a seller you can no longer leave negative feedback if the buyer pays, better off selling locally and in person IMO
