i wanna do something else than the usual PC build this time

been trying Mac OS X for some time now and i love the simplicity of it.

and no, i wont spend 3000$ on buying a new Mac Pro, would be plain stupid imo

this is for the fun of it and the challenge in it.

the hardware will probably be something like this

Z68 Board
i5 2500K or i7 2600K
4-8GB Memory
Either a ATI 5870 or a GTX-470, both should be working great for this afaik
Harddrive, will probably get a used 120gb ssd or similar
DVD-Burner, and a regular 6-800W psu of good quality
Wi-Fi, will buy adapter off ebay and get a Mac Airport card to go with it,

case will most likely be a PowerMac case bought off ebay or locally

what is you thought on this? and have you done something like it youself?

come with your opinions, pros and cons

and if i see a slight hint of flaming in this thread, you will be reported, i dont care who you are, it is NOT what i made this thread for.

and yes i know theres some other forums i could use for it, but im on TPU ;)

No you won't be flamed because Apple hardware is what gets most panties in a twist around here.

Sounds like a cool project to me.

I'll be interested in how this turns out, I've been wanting to do this but never had the time.

I think Fit or Wile-e or some long lasting member did a Hackintosh build once. If they swing by they should offer you any tips or advice. Though there are loads of guides and helpful hints on Lifehacker.

I think this would be pretty good, especially seeing how much the entire things will cost you, instead of buying one new.

I'd like to hear the results as I have wanted to do this myself.

Wonder if there is a way of benchmarking your system against an Apple Mac of similar specs to see which has the better performance.

Also a pricing comparison.

Benchmark Scores 4GHz @ 1.45v, running this way 24/7. Haven't even tried for more than that with this board.
If you want to see the results of similar builds (as well as see some "recommended" builds from Hackintosh guys who really have a grasp on the situation) check out tonymacx86 forums.

One word of advice: skip Fermi for a Hackintosh. The only Fermi card available for the Mac is a Quadro, and the drivers that have had the info.plist file adjusted can't cope with low-power modes. That results in alot of hanging.

Here are some (tested by them) builds.

http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2011/06/building-sandy-bridge-customac.html

Build #4 is pretty slick. Z68, Radeon 6870, i7 2600K, and tons of RAM. Gigabyte boards are almost universally recommended for Hackintoshes, on the tonymacx86 forums, as well as InsanelyMac, et. al. So I'd not rock the boat too hard.

I had a Hackintosh back in the LGA 775 days. E6600 OC'd to 3GHz, P35 board by Gigabyte, 9800GTX...it was a pretty nice box. I love the Hackintosh route if you need a Mac, but ever since I bought Sonar X1, I haven't had a need for Logic Express, and therefore no need for OS X. Still, if you have a need for it, this is a good way to go.

Geekbench. Xbench. Some game benchmarks. There's plenty of ways to bench yourself against Macs, and those first two items have an online database to search.

If you want to check out benches for real Macs, check out Barefeats - http://barefeats.com/

Great thread, ive always loved the idea of a hackintosh would be cool to see someone actually post up a build. Shouldnt be too hard to fit a ATX mobo into the powermac case you can mod where the standoffs are placed.
