Half Life 3 soon ?

Believe it when I see it on Steam.

oh my

valve is expected to release a new VR headset. i wouldn't be surprised if this is the launch game with it, since they did Alyx and people loved Alyx in VR, but maybe also including a non-VR mode, i dunno

*Soon* is always relative when it comes to Valve. They won’t hesitate to delay the project (if they will even reveal it) by whatever timespan they consider necessary to get it where they want it.

It is hard to make both types of games work in VR or non-VR. It can be done but movement in VR is unnatural and slow, so the AI has to be simplistic and dumb. Put that into a normal FPS games and it would play quite poorly. It certainly can be done but it would need different types of AI and whatnot for each version to play right.

oh my
Just a heads up, wccftech is iffy at best sometimes. Unless something they've stated is confirmed elsewhere, consider it rumor or fanciful thinking.
To be fair though, if this is true, better late than never..

The original rumor isn't from Wccftech, it's from Engadget

according to Eurogamer.net's article:

Moreover the source of the rumor is from a longtime Valve insider named Tyler McVicker who reiterated that Half-Life 3 is not a VR game. Valve usually tries to do something new with each major title so HL3 as a VR sequel doesn't really fit their M.O.

A more likely scenario would be something to advance Steam Deck and/or Steam Link, two projects that have occupied much of Valve's recent activities.

Start of so positive then BOOM crashed hope by the end ;).

I'll believe it when I see it. Let's just say, Valve has been a lot busier counting their money flowing in from Steam than making games in the last 20 or so years.

I'm not saying that my bones don't start shaking at the thought of my favourite FPS game ever returning for a long time MIA sequel, but considering how abruptly Valve dropped HL2:Ep3, I have my reservations.

Hopefully Team Fortress 3 is in the box with it.
If so, I hope they'll drop the cartoony art style. And add bots to make it playable via local network / locked server only.

Rumors are rumors. Until someone shows it live, it's vaporware.

This!

God I miss having bots in MP games. Before the internet era I used to play countless hours on BF1942 against bots, it's such a good fun!

I would also dare to say that it's a lot more fun to team up with friends against hordes of bots than to go against angry teenagers with twitchy hands who seem to be dominating the online gaming space these days.

I actually don't want it anymore. It'll have the same issue that Duke Nukem Forever did.

if it’s real hl3 has the potential to help sell pc parts
The last game that did it was diablo3

I don't really care that much. Sure, I loved the first one as much as anybody, but mostly because they really pushed the envelope on the narrative side, which at the time was sorely lacking in games. Some of the AI stuff was also interesting, but overall Quake was far superior in terms of gunplay itself, and that's the meat and bones of any FPS.

And Half Life 2 after the paradigm shifter that was Halo felt quite underwhelming. Sure, it was still fun and had some moments, the key selling point being the gravity stuff, but for me it's nowhere near the quasi-religious experience it seems to be for some folks.

And now, what could they do with the 3? Deliver some outstanding free-form gameplay with destructible environs and next-gen AI? Hardly likely. Probably something about "excellent storytelling" which for me in 2025 is very low on the list of priorities in a video game.

I've said for a long time that a H-L3 should be VR exclusive. Killer app ... unless it's been too long.

I feel the opposite, "excellent storytelling" ie writing is what modern games lack. Destructible environments and next gen AI means nothing if there's no point to it, and there is where writing comes in. The second game remains one of the best written games ever made.

The majority of us don't have VR, so the sales of this mythical game wouldn't be exactly stratospheric.
