The last time an actual Halo game made its way to PC was 2007 when Halo 2 launched three years after the console version to little fanfare, as it required the Windows Vista operating system. Since then Microsoft has not bothered to release any of the mainstream titles on PC. However, that is no longer the case as Microsoft has announced that they will be bringing Halo: The Master Chief Collection to PC. While some may think it too little too late, considering the Master Chief Collection initially launched nearly five years ago, the fact remains with this release PC gamers now have access to the majority of the series including Halo 1, 2, 3, 4, ODST, and Reach which was just recently added to the collection. The only title missing at this point is Halo 5.

While a typical re-release is possible it appears that is not the direction 343 Industries will take as they recognize that PC gamers are an exacting bunch and as such have brought in help from Ruffian and Splash Damage studios in order to polish the collection ahead of its debut. As of now, you can expect support for 4K resolution, 60 frames per second gameplay, and HDR at least as a minimum along with proper controls. Overall the Master Chief Collection offers a ton of content including 67 campaign missions and 120 multiplayer maps when you include both Horde Survival and Spartan Ops. Pricing and availability currently remain unknown, but at the very least it will be available on Steam meaning it is not a Microsoft Store exclusive. That said, it will still require an Xbox Live account.

Good catch I missed that.
I'm not losing hope that they might see sense and sell the collection without the need for XBox Live on the single player side. I have no interest in the multiplayer side of the collection. We'll see though.

So according to the Steam page, while you can buy it on Steam, you still need an XBox Live account to play it. So far, gonna have to pass. Microsoft, this is not the way to go.
Can you even have a windows 10 account without also having a live account? Seems like all of their services are accessible with a mono account these days. Open the xbox app and see if it takes your windows login.

I think there's no need to even reach the Microsoft part... PC always had way better games than Halo, which flopped each time they arrived on PC back in the day (and not only because they were only ported 2 years after launch). The one I played was one of the most repetitive games I ever seen... compared to PC game standards at the time, it was mediocre, to say the least. Not hating, just calling it as it is. There's plenty of console games that had success when ported to PC, but this one was never the case, much less to the same level it had on console...

I don't use Windows 10. Will likely setup a second drive to run it and experiment again.

Are those re-mastered versions of the games? And I mean with increased poly count and Hi-Res textures at least, not just Hi-res and custom format support...

Yes, you can. I log in and use Windows 10 with a local account (most people just glazed past this during the Windows 10 upgrade process and also when they install the OS). I've only authenticated to my Microsoft account to sync the product key with it, but for logging into my PC's themselves, I use the local account. That also said, you can have it so that you only log in with your Microsoft account for certain components of Windows 10, like the Xbox app for example (Not sure if that's changed since the last time I used it but I haven't had Windows try and force me to use my Microsoft account to log into it).

Looking forward to this and on Steam too.

I was reading today that MS will also be bringing DX12 to Windows 7.

Is this really MS? I'm pretty impressed.

Bought Master Chief Collection digitally for Xbox One a while ago, can I play this on my PC now? :)
Microsoft Store currently does not list it as available for PC so cannot check myself yet.

Agreed, I've never really understood the Halo hype to be fair. Its a shooter. OK :p

Yes, on console these games were fully remastered, with a button you could press on the controller to flip back and forth from OG graphics to the new new on the fly. They look great, and ran well when I was playing on my Xbox.

Don’t get too excited. DX12 is going to be on a limited game-only basis, with only support for one game so far.

Just the fact that they are adding support in games at all for a 10 year old OS they have been trying to kill for the past 7.
