I still use my old but proven reliable laptop HDD Toshiba MK3265GSX bought at the end of 2010 with only a CRC error that happened long time ago.

The SMART status is this:

image.png

5 years ago it was this (old capture from an old thread) with the same CRC error lol

Is this disk still reliable given it's at the middle (52) of its possible lifetime but without any serious error? I never had used an HDD for that long time

Thanks :)

well said, i still rather to replace the drive, i have lost so many info on mechanical disks because of sudden deaths on them that im saving quite interesting penny to move to SSD all my drives

Many thanks ;)

About backups. This HD will not store critical info, so if it breaks I won't lose much. The question was about more the device itself.
Because it's at 53% of its lifetime plus some SMART info and I don't know if this means the drive is more likely to fail at this stage. I've never used a disk so much like now.

I make regular images of my entire OS and programs, both from my desktop and netbook with Macrium Reflect to my 2 TB drive.
My music library is stored and updated on 3 HDDs.
My photos are on the phone, on the HDD and in the cloud.

:)

Google's study "Failure Trends in a Large Disk Drive Population"
https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/research.google.com/en//archive/disk_failures.pdf

Warning: Statistics pr0n in linked article.

Summarized, infant mortality is high, especially on heavily used drives. The large variance in year 5 I think shows that trying to predict failures becomes increasingly more difficult as time goes on.

upload_2017-1-4_13-52-22.png

Personally, I don't see anything in those SMART statistics that would indicate the drive is anything but trustworthy and I would consider it reliable. Backups for critical data is still a huge must, but that's true regardless of it being new or old.
Once you're past the infant mortality stage, you should be fine indefinitely.

Interface CRC errors are just errors across the SATA bus, aren't they? Shouldn't even really be referring to the mechanical bits of the drive itself.

Hey there, @Derek12 & Happy New Years, everybody! :)

I'd also second the opinions about keeping multiple backups because this is the surest way to protect yourself against data loss. My suggestion is to keep an eye on the HDD's SMART stats every once in awhile and make sure no other critical attributes are failing/degrading.
It's also a good idea to run the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic utility and see if the HDD passes all the tests there as well.
Since you already backed up all the data from the drive elsewhere, you could also try running CHKDSK [drive letter]: /r and check the SMART status again afterwards.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

Mtbf is the measure of hdds, however if smart trips up or if Hitachi( IBM) Disk Fitness Test detects faults, you better back up. It is also good practice to do it period.

really no excuse to not back up with free and low cost cloud storage so readily available.

still I get someone at least 1 time a month. I can't boot and all my pictures are on it.

Blu ray / DVD is much more reliable than USB flash memory. And you can get 100Gb Blu Ray disks

Lets hope my 3 HDDS, Google Drive, iCloud and my USB sticks don't fail together :)
I had bad experiences with CD/DVD which even stored properly on their cases, they get damaged by some way
I never had Blu-ray

The stat you are looking at isn't even a drive stat, but a controller/connection stat. It's often caused by a lose SATA cable or connection.

I know because my current HGST Ultrastar has 24, because of a lose cable. Still fine.

No, The CRC error wasn't my concern, I did know that it is probably caused by a bad SATA cable. Besides, that error happened long time (with another motherboard/cable)
My concern was the Power On Hours stat, which it's at 52.

The only issue with usb drives is ESD.
Since I began to use USB (15 years ago), I have never damaged one, neither by ESD, physically or something else. None had died nor suffered data corruption. Only lost some of them :banghead:
Anyway I use USB drives more for transfer than backups. That's the role of my external HDD

I wear USB flash drive out. They fail more often then not and its not recoverable. Unlike a drive that dies slowly

WOW I have never wear an USB flash drive, and I have an old TDK 2 GB being used almost daily and still going strong. What are the TBW ratings for them and if they are SLC, MLC, TLC etc.
Yep, true it's true that when they fail, they aren't recoverable unlike HDDs.
Maybe, like SSDs, the flash cells are improving as well as the algoritms
