OK so I have two hard drives - 1TB (Windows, Installation of Applications ect.) and a 1.5TB File Storage (Movies, Games Music ect) so my torrent client saves downloads to my 1TB Hard drive i the Downloads Folder. When there done I move them to the Files Hard Drive. But when I do this windows 7 loses responsiveness and then if I wait long enough it fixes itself but the Files Hard Drive is gone. This has only recently started happening and I haven't made any hardware modifications in a while. Sorry if i forgot anything, just ask an I will answer. System Specs on left.

Perhaps a little understanding so we start on the same page:

1) You have the torrent run to completion on one drive.
2) Once completed you move the files from one drive to another, presumably for permanent storage.
3) You get huge delays whenever you move the files from one drive to the other.
4) Said problem only recently started.

I have a few questions for you.
1) Why not have utorrent save completed torrents onto the storage drive, and have pending torrents on to OS drive? If you're using a green storage drive, the next two questions will help to flesh out why I asked.
2) Are you still uploading the torrents when you move them?
3) When you say "move" do you mean copy, or cut and paste. If your answer to 2 is that you are still uploading, then cut and paste removes the torrent from the download site. This means utorrent has to check the torrent again, and redownload the thing.

Your most likely answer (based upon my understanding) is that you are cutting and copying a file that is still being shared. This means that utorrent is automatically forcing a check of the torrent, which will bring your system to its knees.

If the above is true, then follow this advice:
1) Start utorrent client
2) Go to "Options" on title bar
3) Go to "Preferences" choice in drop down
4) Go to "Directories" option in left hand menu
5) Select the directories finished torrents and pending torrents go into

By automatically moving the completed torrents you do not have to worry about them getting put on storage, though if you have a green drive for storage you will see minor (compared to internet speeds entirely negligible) speed performance costs.

No I remove the torrent before I cut and paste it. Even If I just Copy it after i remove the torrent it still freezes. And its not the kid where something is sucking up all of my processor, nothing works at all. Except the mouse of course.

Ahh, I think I get it now. My apologies for the rather simple answer, but I try to make no assumtions of knowledge when answering the questions. Have you recently checked the status of you hard drives? Whenever I've experienced issues with heavy read-write operation issues its generally been due to hard drive issues.

I have had success using Crystal Disk Info in combination with Cpu-z to get a feeling for how healthy my drives are.

Beyond that, it does not seem like an issue that is windows related. The loss of a hard drive can be attributed (generally speaking) to either HDD failure (firmware or hardware) or controller/wiring failure. If the HDD reads as healthy (generally above 90% in Cpu-z and all green with Crystal Disk Info) you should try replacing the SATA connection, and then RMAing the motherboard if the problem persists. This is the cheapest and fastest way to figure out if the problem is fixable, or needs hardware replacement.

hm, i suspect it is either the cable or my motherboard. I have had the motherboard for three years now and it has gone through stuff, mostly my tinkering and whatnot. But I will be getting a new one within the next little bit. My cables are really crappy so i am leaning towards that.

Sounds to me like your drive is dying. I've seen drives appear and disappear when I have them set up externally for file copies and virus scans at work. Usually means the drive is on its way out.

Get HDTune Pro Trial or another disk checking utility and look at the SMART page. If it has Ultra DMA CRC Errors logged, it's probably a defective cable. Any other error is going to be hard disk related. A dying disk can easily crash the operating system, especially if it is the disk that the OS resides on.

im with red machine on this one, either hard drive is dying or something funky going on with your power supply (maybe bad power cable/sata cable)

This is not the one that the OS is on, and how can it be dying? i havn't had it for very long (like around a year.)

Here is some data I got on iy from SpeedFan's link to the webpage that shows how your Hard Drive is doing

NOTE: not all warnings are reflected on fitness and performance overall values as relevancy is based upon the settings from the hard disk manufacturer who is the best entity deputed to define such relationships.

NOTE : your hard disk has 196 reallocated sectors (this value is very large and your hard disk should be replaced). Hard disks do have spare sectors (usually from 256 up to 1024) used to replace bad ones. This remapping operation is transparent to the end user. Anyway, this can lead to degradated performances (because remapped sectors are in different places of the disk than the original ones and the head needs additional moving). If reallocated sectors grow over time, you might encounter some serious troubles. A backup of the most important data is suggested anyway.

NOTE : your hard disk has 655 pending sectors (this value is very large and your hard disk should be replaced). Those are sectors that couldn't be properly read and that the hard disk logic is waiting for a write operation to try to remap to a spare sector (if available). According to the Reallocated Sector Count attribute, your hard disk seems to have available spare sectors. A simple disk surface scan won't be enough to force the remap operation. You need a read/write surface scan to remap the sector. The best option should be a tool that knows about what should be read from that sector so that it has some option to apply the best fix to the missing data.

NOTE : your hard disk has 604 offline uncorrectable sectors (this value is very large and your hard disk should be replaced). Those are sectors that an offline scanning found as unreadable. Offline scanning is a process that can be automatically started by the hard disk logic when a long enough idle period is detected or that can be forced by some tool. Those unreadable sectors are identified and the hard disk logic is waiting for a write command that will overwrite them to try to remap them to spare sectors (if available).

NOTE : your hard disk Power On Hours Count attribute current value (93) is below the normal range (95 - 100) reported for your specific hard disk model. Basically your hard disk was powered on for more than the maximum time the average user did. This means that either all of the reports collected are from hard disks that were not powered on for too long (this is realistic for recent models) or that your hard disk is becoming old. Usually this is not considered as a pre-failure advisory, but you should check whether you want to replace the hardware or keep an eye on its performances over time.

Maybe tell me more about whats important, and I will be VERY dissapointed in the manufacturer if my hard drive is dying.

Download HDTune and run it. I had a very similar issue with my 2TB drive.

Also I will add another thing I can read just fine from it, as I am copying all my data off of it and onto another one of my hard drives.

Again it seems the reallocated sector count is what is bad.

ok, more info, When I started copying all the stuff over from the problem hard drive in windows it all seemed good, but then it got to a certain file and it couldn't read from the source, i retried it, same thing. I then went to the file (it was an mkv file) played in vlc and it played just fine. What the Hell is going on?

your hard drive has bad/damaged sectors when the head gets to that specific place on the harddrive that is damage its game over, the only thing i would try is HDD Regenerate 2011 but usually at this point its time for a new drive. if it was a faulty cable you would be getting Ultra DMA CRC Errors

it happens, sometimes from a geniune fault, sometimes user being rough with system/harddrive. you may want to check if it had a 1 year or 3 year warranty.

Yeah, one year is a bit short, but consider that there are drives out there which fail the first day. You are lucky though if the manufacturer's warranty still applies...

My 2TB drives were not even 2 weeks old.

Glad you figured out the issue. It's a shame that this stuff happens :(

I would like to point out that it's a good idea to check the health of your drives frequently. In my experience reallocated sectors are a bad sign. A few after a few years isn't a big deal but anything more than that is a disaster for your data waiting to happen.

You don't need a receipt. It goes by serial number only. WD has a record. You can do a warranty check here....
