Yet again i thinking on doing some thing that might be crazy to do on such an old platform. about two years ago i made a thread about running sli GTX 970 with and I7 920 @ 4.2 Ghz and it turned out to work pretty well in benchmark aswell as games. But i cut also se that the I7 920 where at its limit of what i cut feed of gpu´s.

But i have now upgrade to a I7 980X @ 4.29 GHz and where thinking try out GTX 1070 sli, but have seen some people say that pascal do not run well on X58 mobo and do you guys even think that the CPU can feed two GTX 1070?

So i would like to here from other X58 users that maybe have tried running with one pascal cards and maybe even tryed out sli on these X58 platforms. Dit it work well for you or not?

my current system just that cpu and gpu´s are clokket lower for every day use:

I personally wouldnt do it because i think the performance hit would be so big as to make it a very expensive option. I would go for a single 980 or ti if i had the money.

I would be very interested to hear @EarthDog 's opinion.

yeah it is also what i am afraid off that X58 is to old now to keep on upgrade with new GPU´s. A single 980 or TI is no go. Cause two GTX 970 i sli out perform one GTX 980 and performe more or less like one 980 TI or GTX 1070. So two GTX 1070 in sli or i just gonna keep the cards i have now.

I cut try to found two used GTX 980 TI for sli. That would still give a good boost and be cheaper but these cards are just so power hungry.

But thanks for your reply.

Waste of money, unless you game on a 4K monitor, it's not worth to get 2x1070. Lots of games don't scale at all and sometime they downscale with a 1080P monitor. Get 1x GTX 1080, it will be slower in benchmarks but will perform better in games.

With recent games been a able to make good use of multiple threads and DX12/Vulkan (although for the time being DX12 doesn't seem anywhere close to what it was supposed to be with the few games using it) this platform might be more useful than has ever been for gaming. Even though I would not worry too much about the CPU not being able to handle SLI with those cards , I don't think it makes sense to go for 2x1070's unless you want to do 4K , and even then you might be better of to just get a 1080 and drop a few settings rather than deal with bad scalling or no support for SLI at all in games.

This. :)

More threads or not that platform will put a glass ceiling on those cards big time. You SHOULD be worried about that cput with multiple cards for sure. Even one 1070 there is a glass ceiling. Frankly, it's time to move on...

So your all points is that i shut just keep my current cards or get a single GTX 1080. Not the out come i would have exspected, but it does make sence.

So i still only game in 1080P i will thinking about a GTX 1080 or i just shut keep the cards i have now. A single GTX 1080 Would be just as fast or faster and not give me a huge power bill. It might be a good idea.

Thanks for all respons.

I would upgrade your PC and keep the cards before I upgraded the cards... for sho. You are at 1080 for God sakes.. ONE 970 is good for 1080p!!!! I'd bet money in many titles you are neutered by at least 20% because of sli, your res, and cpu.

Alright i have deside for now to keep the cards i have now after all comments and begin to save up in sted.

X58 is getting old and soner or later mobo or some thing else is gonna give up, but it is no secret that i am very fond off this platform properly because i have had it for so long and have served me for the longest time of all the pc i have had.

And with the cpu i have now i think cpu wise i can hold on up to two more years before i finnaly say goodbey to my dear old X58 setup unless i deside i cant live with the gfx i have now. Only time can tell...

@Tomgang, any updates? I got a i7 930 @3,9 HT OFF (With 1,32v vcore and temps to high for @4Ghz+ with my current cooler, a really vcore hungry chip this one of mine sadly)) and I'm will get a x5650 ou a x5670 (Don't sure if any oc capabilities differences) and I'm planning to save for a 1080, 1080 ti or a AMD vega with a 21:9 2560x1080 monitor, will it wort it? Or I have to go directly to ryzen. ~bad english~

Wise, despite i dont like Sli, but the cards will be useful in a near future when you upgrade!
another option is selling while they still worth the penny and avoid losses,

Z170 - Z270 will be a great start for moving up, and take advantage that X58 still worth the penny for selling!
Ram, motherboard & processor could return a interesting penny, dont go X99 cuz new socket for extreme Core i7 series its almost on the corner, hold your horse and do a little research while possible on Z170/270

Nope no news. I am gonna keep GTX 970 SLI. That havent change since Januar. Im gonna wait for Nvidia´s 2000 series cards to come if i upgrade GPU.

Your 970 sli is something like a 1070 in real world isn't it? Any bottleneck at all?

No bottleneck in gennerel. Most games has GPU load at 90 % or more and yes GTX 970 SLI is like one 1070 more or less. Some times a bit faster other times slower. it depends on how well the game supports SLI.

Im at 4.41GHz with 1.356 Vcore/1.343 QPI for daily, I think it's enough and for now I'm not planning on higher for now.
For me its a very good vcore, they say that the x58 xeons are more easy to oc than the bloomfiled cpus, do you agree?

More threads or not that platform will put a glass ceiling on those cards big time. You SHOULD be worried about that cput with multiple cards for sure. Even one 1070 there is a glass ceiling. Frankly, it's time to move on...

What are you talking about? I'm still running a X58 with a six core Xeon X5675 clocked @ 4.2GHz, I have a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD as a boot drive. I can kill your system in performance.
