has there been any word on the 8800gt 256mb release date? i am planning to buy it although i have a 1680x1050 22' monitor, because i just cant spend 269+ right now to get the 512mb ones. reason i want to get it is because it performs just as well as the 512mb ati hd 3870 according to expreview

performance doesnt change with more ram, its just that at high res with high textures, you will get stuttering and sudden (severe) framerate drops. I really reccomend saving for the 512MB.

just save up. Probably by the time they are relesed, you can afford a 512MB version anyway.

//if my speculations are right, the 256MB version will probably only be ~$20 cheaper anyway, just judging by the price differences in previous generation cards with 256/512MB variants.

with res like that (1680x1050) youd want the card with more mem as Mussels has already stated

ehh hope they lower the price of the 512mb gt.

i have a question about the step up program for evga. if i buy a card thats lets say 150 and i choose to step up like three months later before 90 days. will 150 be deducted from the card im stepping up to or will the amount of the card i turn in at the present time be deducted from the step up card? cause i might get 8600gts then step up later when hopefully the 8800gt lowers price

oh and for reference, i've been gaming on this 22" with my system 'mini' (check sig) with its 8800GT 512, and it handles cod4 maxed out with AA off. 2x AA caused occasional lag in multi, but mostly with lots of light/smoke on screen (and easily fixed by turning the smoke/lightign settings down)

i am unsure about how EVGA's step up program works, but i'm pretty sure it'd cost you more than just saving for a new card would. Also, the 8600GT... lacks performance. the one in my storage PC is quite slow compared to a similar priced ATI card (2600XT) - i dislike current ATI cards, but i must admit that is the better card to get in that price range.

hm guess my options are to get a 3870 for 215 when it restocks at bestbuy if the 8800gt 512mb doesnt drop price soon or wait it out with the ati 2400 pro 128mb that is coming with my dell xps 420. cant play much with the 2400 can i?

the 2400 will start every modern game, but performance would be poor - games like crysis which are known to run slow for everyone, will be pretty crap.

However if you play older games or just turn the settigns down, surviving 2-3 months with a 2400 will get you the money for the 512MB card so thats always a good option.

readme said:
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:

CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 2.4 GHz or AMD(R) Athlon(TM) 64 2800+ processor or any 1.8Ghz Dual Core Processor or better supported

RAM: 512MB RAM (768MB for Windows Vista)

VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA(R) Geforce(TM) 6600 or better or ATI(R) Radeon(R) 9800Pro or better

from the readme. the rest of your system will be quite above this, and a 2400 has got to be faster than the years old 6600 series.

oh and P.S, they are very serious on the CPU requirements, i havl earned the game will NOT launch on athlon XP chips or early P4/celerons as it requires SSE2 to start.
