Have AMD drivers improved overs the yrs? Are they better Now then Nvidia's?

exact;y and i to only stick to the WHQLs now its looking like im gonna go back to a ATI for second time in my life, problem now that i keep reading about over heat for the atis so the 290x looks like a good deal but seems like a lot of owners had to RMA theirs 3 or 4 time and heat is the problem and then u have to get a asus rog for 600 and then u might as well get 780ti. Feel like shooting myself already in the 400-450 range does anyone one know the better card to get that 770
