Hi Forums,
I figured this site was a good place to ask; after reading a few posts related to this GPU and seeing how many helpful people there are here.
I was gifted a GTX 460 1GB and installed it in my (very) old computer so I could play Skyrim with some mods (LE version, not SSE). I currently have an Athlon 64 X2 on an ASUS M2N-SLI motherboard with 4GB Ram. (Yes, very old, insert jokes here). The game actually runs smoothly most of the time, even with a bunch of mods. I don't have any graphics-heavy mods (that would require a better GPU and CPU), but started using some that are relatively script-heavy (and I read that upgrading CPU helps with scripts more than upgrading GPU). I'm starting to reach the Athlon's performance limit, getting FPS drops and crashes when there's a lot of action. So, time to upgrade. I don't really want/need a high performance gaming system, just something that can better handle this 10 year old game.
So, here's the question: What CPU would be a good match for this GPU? I figured: I have a 10 yr old GPU running a 10 yr old game, but with a 15 yr old CPU. Maybe something 5-6 yrs old, so that there's potential for a future upgraded GPU (maybe after this crypto mining insanity passes). I was thinking i3 or i5, or ryzen3 or 5. (intel or amd? is there a thread for that? ) I understand that I would need a new motherboard and probably new ram too. My budget is preferably under $400, but flexible. Thanks!!!
