HAVE I MADE IT SLOWER??

Hi - I know just enough to be dangerous and I fully accept the slating I will likely receive for this post. However in between the abuse I know someone might give me some assistance, so it's worth it. I have an old Asus K55VD laptop and wanted to make it faster, so I thought adding some RAM would do the trick. It started with 8GB (x2 4BG), then I increased to 12 GB and now it's at 16GB. I used a programme I found online called MaxxPI to check the speed. The image attached shows the three readings at 8GB, 12GB, and 16GB. With my untrained eye the 12GB set up seems to be the fastest (higher readings across read, write, copy and lower latency). If that's true, why do we think that is...have I bought "shit" RAM (it's Crucial)? Many thanks

The second test is showing a faster CPU clock, that's probably why it's showing a lowest latency.

Aye pretty much this. I have an i3 based laptop of the same generation (see signature) and it flies, all thanks to the SSD. More RAM only helps if you often actually run out of it.

My exsperiance with the MaxxMEM test is it is all over the place regarding performance test, so try with another program, like AIDA

I'd say it wasn't the same chipset or same ram on those three screenies. A better chipset usually means an increase in bandwith and consequently, better performance by a small margin. I asuume the third chip you put inside has higher latencies then the first two, and the mobo adjusted to slowest one.

Yes this was it, thanks for spotting that. I did another test and it came back faster.

ah, just spotted it...the first two were 11-11-11-28, and the third one was 13-13-13-32, the third chip has higher frequency but at cost of latency (smaller figures are better).
Mobo simply adjusted the first two to the slowest, third one, to avoid issues.
Long story short, getting a higher frequency isn't always the best solution.
If you don't mind me suggesting, type in so-dimm ddr3 cl11 into your search and get those chips instead.

In Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Processor power management > Change Minimum processor state to 100% and change Maximum processor state to 100% then hit OK then do the test.

This will ensure a fair test.

also, memory calculations are usually better with each new gen, ddr4 is always better then ddr3, just get lowest CL you can

To answer the OP question "Have I Made It Slower" Yes, you have made it slower.

You can get 2133 memory with the same timings as your old memory (16GB Kit). Kingston, Corsair & G Skill all made these memory.

Can't find link for the Corsair, but I have all of these memory (not for sale sorry), modified by me, all now have built-in thermal sensors.

What is your chipset and memory configuration? How many slot is occupied in those variants? 2x 4 gb, 4+8 gb and 2x8 gb? Are there an integrated memory?
Edit: oh, i see now first was 2x4 gb. And do not rely on one test, try out more like Aida, winrar, 7zip.

When you run aida and compare, let us know. MMemm is MEH and inconsistent. It hasn't been updated in YEARS.

I googled ram's yesterday and it seems kingston predator is best buy for desktops, and for mobiles is again kingston, hx impact ram.
