I am planning to buy a reference r9 290 or 290x but these cards run at 94C most of the time and make alot noise. I was wondering if newest Crimson drivers brought any improvement to these cards in this regard?

I wonder why you would buy old tech nowadays, get yourself a RX480 or Nvidia equivalent.

290x is half the price of rx 480 and not so behind of it in terms of performance.

Mine was hitting 94c and throttling bad when I bought it a month or two back, I bought some new thermal paste, cleaned the old stuff and reapplied. It maxes out at around 80c in heaven benchmark now with no throttling, no idea if crimson drivers have helped but I assume most of it is down to the fresh TIM application, I'd recommend doing this if buying used anyway, especially on notoriously hot cards like the 290x

Might I suggest you don't buy a Reference version then, my 290X runs at 1150mhz 24/7, is whisper quiet and does not exceed 70C, if you can get one significantly cheaper than a 480 then fair enough but on a reference card would you really be happy to put up with the heat and noise?

When did drivers affect the temps

Thought it's all in the gpu bios that controls the fan speed at different temps

Every now and then it's happened in both camps, with good as well as bad results.

With the first revision of the ReLive drivers, the Relive function didn't work, but with the second version it works like a champ and the quality of the recording is breathtaking!
