Personally I'd get the crossfire motherboard for £80 and pair it with a single 512 MB 4870 for £115, performance wise it will only be slightly slower than the 4770 crossfire (faster if overclocked) yet you'll save a lot of money. And if your suspicions are correct and game developers start catering for crossfire drop in a secondary 4870.

Either way you'll benefit from:

  1. Single 4870 cheaper than 4770 crossfire, money saved (more money saved with non CF board)
  2. Single solution with similar performance, perhaps faster if overclocked
  3. Ability to drop in a secondary 4870 if crossfire support in games takes off
  4. Purchasing the secondary 4870 in a year will be cheaper than today's prices
  5. Having 4770 crossfire will be slower than 4870 crossfire in a year.

The problem with the GTX260 is they are still expensive, typically around £140, the 4870 can be had from £103 yet performs on par with its GTX260 counterpart.

Also if you go the crossfire route, you can save more money by pairing the 4870 with the 4830 or 4850 :)

XFX HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 £124.27inc vat
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/155497

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 Toxic 512MB GDDR5 £119.99 inc VAT
http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-185-SP

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 XXX 512MB GDDR5 £114.99 inc VAT
http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-137-XF

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB GDDR5 £103.49
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAP-4870

Now if you pick up that 4870 for £103, you'll pay around £108 ish once delivery is added on, this is more than £50 cheaper than the 4770 crossfire solution (around £85-90 saving if a non- CF motherboard is bought as well) for similar performance.

you can crossfire 4870 with 4830?
surely that wont give EPIC gains in performance
also.. GTX 260 is better than 4870... isn't it?

The 4800 series can be crossfired with a mix and match of its cousins. (the 4830, 4850, 4850 X2, 4870 X2, 4890 etc)

The 4870 DDR5 512 MB is the same speed as the GTX260 (216 core). Depending on the game it can go either way, only a few frame rates separate the two cards.

The DDR5 1 GB version is usually slightly faster than the GTX260 (216 cores), but again it goes both ways depending on the game.

There is no better card. Get the cheapest the two!

PS. you need a SLI compatible motherboard to use two GTX260s

Edit:

no such thing? :p
i see... but... HD4870 temps are a bitch apparently.. but im gettin HAF 932
so that might not be a problem

That was a typo I meant DDR5.

The temperatures of the 4870 is fine, for the price you can not complain.

I would say slightly high, but definitely not outrageously high.

Cuda and physics? so does the 9400 GT but the card is still shit slow.

Edit 2:

lmao. you're mean!
Physx might be almost SLIGHTLY important
but DX 10.1 doesnt really seem like it's important to me

You shouldn't be concerned with DX 10.1 or Physics X.

Physics X does little for performance and in some situations it hinders performance. PhysX is a marketing gimmick to sell graphics cards. Paying atleast £30 more for an GTX 260 opposed to a 4870 for a feature that is not fully supported by game developers is silly, at best you'll enjoy an additional 5-10 FPS in the very small section of 2-5 major game titles that was released with PhsyX during the entire year of 2008-9?

Edit 3:

I hear you in your head saying "I will be prepared for physics when game developers use it"

Its the same argument with crossfire or DX 10.1, your card will be way too slow to use physics when it is fully supported as standard.

I`m in love I don`t think I have seen better looking card. :respect::respect:

my modded 4830 looks better!

Edit:

One sec uploading the screenshots!

Edit 2:

The first picture is the stock XFX heatsink and fan, its black and looks really sexy. The second picture is the new custom Thermaltake copper ramsinks, the third picture is the copper ramsinks with the accelero S1 Rev 2 passive cooling.

i'm going to be gaming at 1680x1050
so i don't think even 1 single 1GB card is necessary
might be getting a 1920x1080 monitor though..
so the crossfired HD 4770's are going to be my other choice if i decide to go 1920x
if i go 1680x then i'll go 512mb HD4870

That £103 4870 is only for this weekend only, so if you really want it cheap you have to act soon!

They are the same price (surprisingly) on novatech
i hear the 4850 performs only SLIGHTLY better than the HD4770
but the 4770 cools better and uses less power.
which should i get?

Since you seem to be a newbie at it, let me just tell you this:

If you plan on overclocking past 830/850 then you are going to need to flash your cards BIOS with the ASUS TOP bios. I have them and I can send you a link that has them.

Afterward, download the SmartDoctor utility and use it to put your voltage up to about 1.125 (no more) and push your cards to 875/850 with riva tuner :D Or you can go even farther by putting the voltage to 1.175. You should be able to hit 915 or so and about 1000 on the memory :D

Edit: Your going to need better cooling. I suggest the Mushashi or any cooler that works with 43mm mounting holes.

Then you will be limited to 830/850 which will still leave you below the 4850. Getting to around 850/875 or somewhere around there gets you to above a 4850 (except on the memory bandwidth which you will have to do at least 1000 to give yo 64GB/s).

Sorry I have a lot of experience messing with my card and it rocks! Though I wish I had xfire e_e

i'm getting the pc from a different seller.

Can he beat the Novatech deal?

This changes everything because a lot of my reasoning behind the 4870 was based on the prices on Novatech, Overclockers and Ebuyer. e.g. I only told you to select the 4870 over the GTX260 (216 core version) because of the price gap, if the other dealer is willing to lower the GTX260 (216 core version) to match Novatechs £103 offer or overclockers £115 offer you'd be better off with the GTX260 216 core.

Edit:

PS. Do not get fooled into purchasing the 192 core version.

Edit 2:

Is this dealer dodgy? are these cards falling off the back of a van, because if he is looking for a new client I'm willing to take a few GTX260s off his hands for £30 :)
