I wonder if i should buy a 512mb hd4870 now or wait until the 1gb version comes out.
Will it bring a performance increase or does absolutely nothing like the 8800gt 512 vs. 1gb
I also plan on moving to vista 64bit to make good use of all this memory. I need some advice to set my mind :)

On a 22" screen, the difference will probably be zero.

Yeah, only a high resolution screen would benefit of a 1gb card. that's true.

depends on the resolution.. extra memory is really only needed for processing large data (higher resoltions)..

as ghost said.. unless you have an uber high resolution.. that 22" monitor wont make too good of a use of the extra memory.

hd 4870 512mb does not even choke at 1920x1200 I can play all my games at 8Xaa minus crysis ofcourse, I believe 1gb card should only benefit at 2560 resolution, unless you have a 30inch monitor I dont think you should wait for a 1gb version. even than only some of the games represent the slow downs at the 2560 resolution. hd 4870 uses memory very effeciently, 512mb of ram should be good enough for a 1920x1200 resolution even for future games, only the highest resolution might require 1gb of ram, this is one reason you see the gtx 260 come back to beat the hd 4870 in some games at 2560 because it has more ram
