HD 4870 temperature sensors?

Hi folks!
I have a reference design HD 4870 512MB and it play most games that I throw at it at the right settings. One thing that have me worried for a few weeks is the GPU temperature sensors on GPU-Z:

As you can see, temps of Shader Core are ten degress higher than DiplayIO temps. More worrying is the Memory controller temps at 108.5 degrees. Is it okay to be this much difference around different areas of the die? these temps are as such because I had fan at 28%. If I put the fan at 34% (2200 RPM) the noise is very noticeable, DISPIO drops to 70, SHADERCORE to 82, and MEMIO to 96.
I also have done some modifications to BIOS clock setting so now it drops the core clock to 250 at idle. And I found that I could lower the 3D clocks on this from 1.263 to 1.163.
Also I think the card has good quality TIM because temps don't jump around, they take a while to go higher or drop down and adjusting the fan speed helps with temps to really cool the card. besides with it's own fan speed profile, it heats up to about the same temperatures as the reviews said it would. Idle around 75-80, Load 85-90.
Any Ideas/thoughts?

I would try putting some new paste on it, i had some thing like that to happen and once the paste was replaced the temps were more reasonable. Maake sure thee paste is not old as some have a shelf life and personally i like MX-2.

However it could be a faulty censor but will not know until you replace the paste.

And if you want get the temps even lower try placing ( if possible ) a fan in between the cpu cooler and the back of the video card for extra cooling as some coolers block the PCB from getting cooled..

Thanks very much for your suggestion!
I wanted to re-apply TIM before but a couple of screws just wouldn't budge. But finally I managed to take it apart only to discover there was just a blob of watery black kinda rubbish, corners of the GPU (where the Memory interface was located) had no TIM at all!:shadedshu
I removed it with tissue and applied some white TIM material, and cleaned up the heatsink and fan dust as well with my own breath while I was at it and boy am I glad I did.
this is the result with the same low fan speed as before but look at the drop in MEMIO::rockout:

Eww sounds nasty, much better and if you cool the back of the card ( be careful ) temps can get better too how much depends on the cooler in use.

I woulds wounder if that 81c memio censer could be better how ever i think might be giving false readings.

Yeah I read in some other forum that it might be a wrong reading. But still it's only 81 and I'm okay with that.
And I think overall temps should be fine now, I don't know how running a portion of GPU at 107 degrees effects its lifetime.
And I'm seriously considering a 7970 for an upgrade, it's really about darn time but logic dictates I wait another month or two to see what AMDs new hawaii stuff looks like.

Yeah i am waiting my self although my cards much better than what your using. But then Good Ol Obama could screw my chances of upgrades ever again by taking income tax of everyone.

Yeah I don't usually spend a whole bunch on latest tech but now that a 7970 has dropped to only $310 seems like a no-brainer.
