HD 7970 Decider

Hey ive started this to find out just how good the HD 7970s are, is it worth for me to get one or to find a card for cheaper, i was wondering how it runs on games such as:
Starcraft2
Battlefield 3
Crysis2
Shogun total war
The empire total wars
Most call of duties new and old

Check reviews, most of those games you list are tested in the review.

But, if you're looking for an overall anecdotal comment on it, I'll say this:

Almost every $200 card and above on the market today are going to be able to run the games you just listed very well, at full HD (1920x1080p) on medium to ultra detail and full FPS. This is because most of these games have been optimized for the now 5 year old console specs

If you're buying a 7970, it's more for future gaming, and making sure your games are as smooth as possible, and maybe turning on some extra details that don't affect gameplay or only subtly improve graphics.

There are some upcoming games that look to really push graphics processing, such as Company of Heroes 2 and ArmA 3. But, don't expect to get much use out of super high end cards until the next generation of consoles comes out that make all the fancy features that are barely supported now into standard features.

The nVidia GTX 670 just released, and it's a pretty beastly card. Blizzard games seem to run better on nVidia gpus too.

Given current pricing, the GTX 670 is the obvious call but it (like the 680) starts to suffer as resolution and graphics stress is close to maximum (i.e. 2560 resolution gaming).

If you're gaming on less than 2560x1440 (or 1920x1200 and below), I'd go for the 670. But wait to see if AMD drop their prices (they will). Nvidia can probably afford to drop prices too.

Currently the general consensus is:

680 beats the 7970 in most titles by a small amount overall. But the 7970 wins a few.
The 7970 beats the 670 by a small amount overall but the 670 wins a few.

All the cards overclock but given a balance of power consumption, noise and price, at the moment, if you want high end, the only real option is a 670. Unless you game at 2560 res where the 7970 memory may come in handier if games become more stressing on the gpu (unlikely tbh).
