Absolutely. Your old drive had a read speed of about 20 -70mbs. The new one will be about 150 - 130

Your can test that with HDtune free program. Also it will let you know if your new drive is damaged

have you given any thought to a sm ssd for os and another drive for any storage? That would be a great improvement. you could even keep your surrent drive for now and get a smaller ssd on sale.

I recommend that, too. SSDs really let you see and feel an improvement over HDDs. Like, Photoshop on a Samsung Spinpoint F1 takes a while to load. On an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD, it takes mere moments.

Agreed on the SSD front. Going from one HDD to another HDD will give small boosts, and you may notice the difference.

Going from a HDD to a new current gen SSD (I like the look of the corsair force SSDs) will give a massive leap though (think going from a single core cpu to a quad core kind of leap). When I went from HDDs to SSDs as my OS drive everything started faster - there was no "lag" between asking to launch something and it starting to launch - when windows loaded everything was almost instantly available once I had logged in (where before I'd lose ~20 seconds waiting for everything to be ready to launch it's there in <1 second after entering my password).

of course many of the latest SSDs are bottlenecked on SATA2 speeds (3gbps) so on an older SATA2 motherboard you'd need a PCI-E SATA3 drop-in card to see the proper speeds of some of the new drives.

IMHO that is a rather weird comparison, because the speed increase from a quad to a single is not very constant (software dependent).

It wasn't a literal "you can multitask better" but more of a "look how brilliantly fast this is" comparison.

On a single-core if I ran a virus scan or a disk defrag or a compile of software or installing a large program I couldn't watch a video (or do any comibination of the aforementioned things at once). I couldn't do 2 complex things at once - so although it would "do" it was extremely limited compared to what I could do with a multi-core cpu.

The same goes for storage speeds -HDDs "do" but with an SSD everything is so fast and responsive you notice how slow HDDs really are.

No PCI slots due to the sound card I had to just install. :'(

The WD caviar black series have a 64MB cache/buffer, which is prefered over the 32 on the spinpoint, so I dont see the biggest problem in people nodding their heads. Also I believe both drives will perform relatively at the same speed, if not faster on the caviar...

caviars are slower at the lowe end do to platter density Sata 3 also if memory serves me right has higher overhead on the HDD then Sata 2

the F3 is faster then even the 2TB Caviar Black Velocilraptors etc etc

The fastest HDD overall is still the

Samsung F4 320gb

The major point here is the Samsung Drives are faster they are quieter they are cheaper and have higher capacities

i cant recommend someone buys a 750gb drive when for $2 more they get a 1000gb and with promo code its $8 cheaper or there about, its kind of a no brainer.


now with all that said getting a 60gb SSD minimum would be a good increase but keep in mind that capacity will fill extremely quick without an HDD for installing programs to and you will have to manually tell your apps to install to that HDD otherwise youll fill the SSD relatively quick and then be shit out of luck,

Now since you seem pretty wise on the subject of HDD's, does the speed compare mathematically? As in, the new HDD, by testing, is like 8 times faster, so will I notice a difference in response of that amount? Or does it not compare like that?

it dosent work that way. you will notice a difference but it wont be like OMG AWESOME but it will still be noticeable,

I noticed the difference going from a 500gb AAKS drive i bought in 2006 vs the F1 1tb in 2009 the difference was there the only way to see a huge difference is an SSD, but that said F3 1TB will show a good improvement for you.
