Just thought I would put this out there, tried the fan fix on my 3870x2, works just the same, I know this can be done with riva tuner and possibly ATI Tool (I couldn't seem to get figure it out with ati tool 0.27b4).

Try RivaTuner 2.10. ;)
What's new:

* Added AMD RV770 graphics processors family support. Now almost all RivaTuner's features including overclocking, low-level fan control and hardware monitoring are fully available on AMD RADEON HD 48x0 series display adapters.
And it really works. I have a lot of guys in our forums that are very happy now. :D

I've been working with the CCC Profile-Fan-Hack for a while now and have been updating the instructions regularly on some other Forums that I belong to. So if anyone still prefers to control their fan speed old school :) like me see below. I love Rivatuner myself and have used it for my past two Nvidia Cards, but I figured why have another program like Rivatuner running in the system tray when I don't have to as my HD4870 needs only a single fan-speed to operate stabily. Anyway, I know this is a little late to the party but here ya go .....

First of all, many thanks to Bretware on Guru3D who originally came up with the concept for this. See link below. Great little fix, single Card users only need to make two changes in the XML file created by your ATI Profile. I tried this and it worked perfectly using a fan-speed of 38%.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=2751569&postcount=8

First Enable Overdrive in the Catalyst Control Center.

Then Create a new Profile using the Profiles Manager in the CCC and make sure Save All Catalyst Control Center Settings is selected.

For Vista

Open any Folder, goto Organize Menu --> Folder and Search Options --> Select View Tab ---> Select "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Then goto the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

For XP

Open any Folder, goto Tools Menu --> Folder Options --> Select View Tab ---> Select "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

Then goto the following location and open the following file for editing "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles\Your CCC Profile.XML. The xml file will have the same name as the Catalyst Profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

HD 4850/HD4870 Users - should change the values below Bolded in Red within the Profile XML file.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Crossfire Users - must also make identical changes to the section labeled <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_1">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_1">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

HD HD4870X2 Users - should change the values below Bolded in Red within the Profile XML file. Note if changing the section beginning FanSpeedAlgorithm_1 does not work, try making your changes in the section for FanSpeedAlgorithm_0. It seems results vary between brands of the X2.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_1">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_1">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_1">
<Property name="Want" value="23" />

Change the "Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value=" from "Automatic" to "Manual"

Then under "FanSpeedPercentTarget_x", change "Property name="Want" value=" from "23" to your desired fan speed.

Save the file then reload the Profile you just edited in the CCC. Done.

Edit 1:

After experimenting with my HIS HD4870 I found a fan-speed of 39% works best for me. My temps went from 79C at idle to 48C.

Edit 2:

Contrary to instructions posted on Guru3D by Bretware, most people are able to set their fan speed to "Automatic" rather than "Manual". Having it set to "Automatic" should allow the fan speed to ramp-up if needed beyond the fan-speed you entered. This doesn't work for me however and I must use "Manual".

Edit 3:

If you're using Catalyst Drivers 8.6 Hotfix there is no "Profiles" Sub-Folder in the Path and your Profiles will be created in C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Your CCC Profile.XML

does it matter if your 4870 is like a hair dryer on constant:laugh: it keeps the damn thing cool enough

ATi Tray Tools also works now for those who rather use that :)

weird...my sapphire fan speed @ 50% no longer keeps my gpu cool. I'm at 67degrees idle right now...ho hum? stock clocks, not a horrible ambient temp but not great either. using the ccc fan fix.

edit: is it alright to use such a high % for 24-hour use? thats what I've been doing..

My fan has been locked in at 55% for a while now. Have you tried replacing the thremal paste? I hope your fan isn't wearing out already!

Thanks guys. I set my quad crossfire 4850 fan values at 50% and my idle temps are all about 50 degrees Celsius. Sure it is a bit noisy but with loud games cranking it will not be a problem. Anyhow thanks so much to all who participated in this thread. The heat issues were a bit scary.

I made two proflies in CCC for my 4870.

One profile marked "Low Power" with the memory and GPU @ 500Mhz and the second profile marked "Default" which are the default setting 750/900 with shorcuts on the desktop.

I use the "Low Power" profile for everything except demanding games. By setting the memory speed at 500Mhz, i shaved off about 5 more degrees (Now @ 38) and the card requires less energy.

I could even make a third profile and try out overclocking the card for testing purposes.

I have two profiles as well... one with the fan speed at 40% and the other where the fan is at 60%.

I have the lower one so I can sleep at night. The thing about my msi card is since it's stock overclocked, it runs hotter... at 60% it idles at 51/52... at 50% is idles at like 59
