HD4850, dead?

hi there... When i started my computer this morning, i couldn't load windows. So i tried to removed my second gfxcard, and it worked. So, i put the 2nd card in the first slot and removed the other on, not getting any picture at all. Though, i can hear the hdd's, and it sounds like its booting, i just cant see it.. So, i put the first card in the first slot again, and just put the 2nd card in the slot, no power and no cf cable. :shadedshu it still doesn't load windows. I get to the load screen, after that it just goes black.. So as soon that i put the 2nd card in the computer, it wont start up properly... It worked just last night Anyone knows whats wrong, or is it just plain dead?? Cuz i sawed in the original cooler, so i cant RMA if its dead I thought maybe if i flash it with original bios, it'll work. But i can't flash with atiflash, it says i dont have any adapters...

EDIT: forgot to say that i didn't have any vmod active at the time..

Sounds like its getting hot and shutting down. Try putting some better compound on or getting a better heatsink first.

cuz he wont be able to RMA it if he does right ?

I RMA'd mine, I had a aftermarket cooler on it and took it off and popped the stock one on and they accepted it. I got the new one in my computer right now.

What do you mean you "cut" into your heatsink?

I have an accelero s1 on, so heat is not the prob. Also, non of the led's show anything, the flash as normal, then nothing. Cut the original cooler:

Also try using the stock cooler or make sure that that its getting 100% contact, re-install it etc.

Ive even switched acceleros between the cards, the 1st card still work, the 2nd dont.. Im running 1 120mm fan on it..

also when you cut it, im thinking the HS at the end did you blow off the card or cleaned it before putting it in the comp ?

Yes i did, and also, this is 1 week after i mounted the acceleros..

Yes, i clocked my bios to 800/1100.. I put the stock cooler on now, and it's gotta work somewhere cus the fan speeds up when its getting into windows and all that. It boots, i just cant see it.. But this time, my screen showed "out of range". So it probably sends something, that i just can see.. Any idea of how i should do to rewrite my bios?

you say you can see the splash screen then it goes black?

are you using a dvi connection? can you try a vga connection? if not then try booting in safe mode and see if you can still see it after the splash screen.

Yes, i am... Since i cant take away the bios.. But the idle's set to 300/500, so i think that is what's its in when booting..

Sorry, whats the 'splash' screen ? Im right now using a vga screen, with a dvi-> vga dongle. But it works fine with the other card...

Since you have one working card, you will need that one in slot #0. Put the bad card in slot #1 and flash it using ATiFlash. Anything over 700mhz on that card most likely will need more voltage.

Computers are mystical things.. It suddenly works I didn't DO A THING, yet, they work flawless Im gonna change to stock cooler on both cards now, ive flashed the 2nd card to stock bios, so that's fine now. Thanks for the help guys

yeah make sure they can run at those clocks before flashing them

play a game for like 1-2hrs loop 3dmark06 etc.

What the crap! I started vantage to check stability, went down to get a coke. When i got back, the screen was black, like it was when the card didn't work. The computer had rebooted for some reason, and the card have gone back to its previous state... Now it wont boot anymore...

It boots as it did before, when i sayed it didn't boot, i meant it booted like before, where i couldn't see it..
