I keep getting sysytem crashes and read afew references to removing the factory settings of the overclocked toxic card back to a normal 4850 512mb version. How do I do this?:)

Unlock the Settings
Underclock it till it's stable or just put it at stock settings, although I'd be looking to send it back with an angry letter asking why their card's not capable of running what it should be.

What temps are your card at idle and load? Typical Sapphire, I bet its overheating.

thanks all. Doesn't feel like it's a nice system when it keeps crahing. I will try that ATI catalyst now. How do i monitor card heat? I did suspect maybe it was overheating as it just cuts out during a game:)

just been to the catalyst control ATI coverdrive(should have looked there before I guess!) unlocked settings and reduced GPU to 600 from the factory 675. Let's see what happens. The temperature dial in that says 36-37

You might want to try lowering the memory also. I believe some of the toxic 4850s were crashing from the memory being clocked too high.

How do i lower the memory? there is a setting on the overdrive saying memory clock, but that's already at the min'm 1100 in a range of 1100-1200, or is there somewhere else I should look?

Memory should go lower than that, I'll check in 45 minutes if it can go lower in CCC on my card, otherwise just up your fan speed, use the test custom clocks function, that should be able to show you load temps, although not as accurately as possible.

The GDDR3 on the Toxic HD4850 is superior to other HD4850s.
Underclocking it will only hinder it's performance.

I've had simliiar problems with different HD4850s and what has worked for me is fine tuning the speed of the PCI BUS of the MB. This may be able to do in your BIOS.

In any case it's probably all related to the drives. I just went 9.4 and had a bunch of problems. Think I got my system working right now.

I tried the test custom clocks in CCC and it went to 45 degrees temp and just says passed. MY version of CCC is 09.3 should I change this?

The problem is the fan on the Toxic. It doesn't spin fast enough. Check out the other post that I posted in.

If it's going to 45 degrees under load then I doubt it's a fan problem, try updating your drivers to 9.4s, I've got mine running at the max settings in CCC on that with load temps never going over 50 degrees.

I doubt it was @45 degree under full load. He need sto run Furmark for at least an hour to test the stability and temps.

The 45 degree could be true if he changed the clock and RAM speeds to way below standard HD4850 speeds.

I'm positive it's the fan.

Do a search you will see that people have had problems with fan control on the Toxic HD4850.

The problem is the fan on the HD4850 Toxic. No fan control. It doesn't spin fast enough to cool down the card.

Examine.

When I go home I'll give furmark a go and see what temps it puts mine at, mine's OC'd to the max CCC allows without any problems, I don't understand why people think these cards are toasters.

When you do that please post some screen shots like I did.

I'm sure it's the lack of fan control with the slow fan on the Toxic Hd4850 that makes it heat up.

As you can see from the screen shots I posted the VisionTek heat sink and Fan works much better than the Toxic Zalman. Why? Look at the fan speed settings?

The Toxic fan is super slow and unadjustable while the VisionTek stock fan is jamming because it can be adjusted with CCC.

thanks guys, really appreciate your help. Fan sounds plausible, but why would they ship with a fan that's not up to it? Where do i find this furmark? what heat level is unstable then?

I'm thinking they may have handicapped this card with a slow spinning fan to keep it from hurting HD4870 sales.

Either that or they were in a rush and slapped it together without trying to implement fan control.

I have upgraded my air cooling solution to Acellero Twin Turbo on the Toxic HD4850 and put the VF900 with Accelero heat sink kit on the other HD4850.

I'll do some test with screen shots like above to see the changes. Since doing this I have been able to play UT3 at higher clocks than before without my machine crashing. Like a new system.

I'll do the Furmark in Crossfire test to see the changes to verify the change in temps. I'm almost positive the temps are lower.

I'll be back later on tonight with screen shots.

So... don't under clock your Toxic HD4850 till you try better cooling.

Its not overheating.. send the card back. You paid for a OCd card from the factory, its guaranteed to work at the frequencies you get it at. In your case its not working at those frequencies, worthy of RMA.

thanks. i'm in two minds what to do at the moment. I have to say since i turned down the settings and enabled manual fan control to put it at 100%, the one game I was trying to play 'empire total war' is much more reliable, but still not perfect! I wanted to test it a bit more before making a decision. SonDa5 I think you are right about the fan. Ketxxx you are also right and I think it certainly does not do as promised!!

as ketxxx says you may be able to settle for lower clocks to get it stable but why put up with that? youve payed extra for an oc'd card that isnt stable at the speeds they set it at, you paying for something your not getting, thats false representaion and why settle for it?
