HD6870 Problem

i've bought a new video card " Radeon HD 6870" and installed it to the motherboard, but whenever i turned on the pc i would get no display from the dvi port and the hdmi port. So i decided to remove the video card and use the integrated graphics chip to go to windows and install the drivers that came with the CD. Afterwards i turned of the pc , pluged in the card " connecting the 6pin connecters" and turned on the pc. I still got the annoying black screen from the hdmi port ( I was using hdmi to dvi cable) , but when i tried the dvi port (dvi to dvi cable) it booted up this time, but the screen appeared to have some horizontal lines all over it, in the bios, boot up menu and the whole desktop. Whenever i went to the resolution options, it said i had that the Screen was pluged in to nothing, and in the device manager it said the display was a Radeon HD 6800 Series. I updated the drivers but after i restart the pc, when windows was loading i got an annoying blue screen, and it would not boot. It would only boot to safe mode, but i was still getting the same annoying vertical lines. Im not sure if its the video card or the pcie express slot. I have a HD 2600 and when i plug to the motherboard i always get a blank screen as well. I've updated bios, i've tried reseting bios, blabla ...

I've uploaded some images , so if you people dont mind , please check it out.

My System Specs are:

M2N68-AM Plus Motherboard
Athlon II X2 240
3GB DDR2 Ram
OCZ ZS 750W
Radeon HD 6870 1GB

You have a faulty GPU, my friend. Send it back for a replacement.

You should also look at upgrading your CPU. Dual-cores just don't cut it these days.

Red..Your saying he has two bad GPUs..Its posible

If its not the DVI cable then its the motherboard. But you need to test everything in a diff computer RMA

Could be a faulty monitor or cable - have you got any other screens & cables to try it with?

**edit**

actually a good test is to take a screen shot of the banding you see on the screen and post it here - if the screenshot has corruption then it's a problem with your GPU(s), otherwise it is most likely the monitor/cable as it would be very unusual for 2 separate GPUs to have faults between the GPU and cable.

Well, im getting a new motherboard next week, the "Asus M5A78L-M/USB3". The CPU should not really be a problem, i know that these days dual core aint really enough, but im getting 8GB DDR3 and my cpu is overclocked to 3.5GHz so it should not be a big bottleneck. Anyways about the card, it might be the dvi cable the center of the problem, but theres two dvi port on my video card, and only one of them work, the other dvi and the hdmi port both give me a blackscreen.Im thinking of reinstalling windows, but i always have a sensation that i have a problem with my pcie. Tomorow im going over to a friends house, and test the video card to see if the problem still occurs. But if anyone still has any other ideas on how fix the problem, feel free to post it.

Take a screenshot of the corruption and post it here - if it was a PCI-E issue we would see corruption on the screenshot. It isn't windows as the banding occurs when in the BIOS menu.

Hi m1NiBaGz, well im a user of 6870 myself and hell ye i did gone truth many problems sometimes. Anyways first thing what i notice you havent remove old drivers , one time i was using a onboard GFX (ATI)for short time (Till new Card Arrives) so then when i did plug new card to PCI-E port and i did start pc i have same problem lke you (lines on screen and BSoD ) . Just plug old card remove any ATI software then plug new Card and install new drivers, if that not going to help just RMA the new card .

It isn't the drivers as there is corruption on screen on the boot screen and in the BIOS menu - the drivers don't load until windows is booted up.

EDIT: atikmpag.sys
What that means is the card crashed and the card is an ATi/AMD, nothing else.

Edit: Put it this way, the BSOD is cause by that .sys stop working, but that doesn't mean the driver is faulty at all.
A faulty Graphics card gives you the same BSOD.

The lines are not because of drivers or any software at all. The BSOD may be but m1NiBaGz is swapping out cards trying to find the cause of the lines and lack of video output. Once that issue is sorted then uninstalling drivers is the right move (as you suggested) however I was saying the lines are nothing to do with drivers.

Trust me, it's a bottleneck. My overclocked Phenom II quad-core is a bottleneck.

Yes , the lines can be there , i remember one time i did have same problem, even when i was trying to start system in safe mode. Thats some strange thing about ATI cards, What i done ather time was:
i was using onboard GFX(ATI) boom all fine ,
then my new card comes so as all we do , quick install and try to boot up , no luck at all ,no signal from new card and even when i did plug cable (any ,DVi,VGA or HDMI) to onboard card i was getting strange lines on my screen. After some time i was in safe mode and i was removing old drivers , then boot up (using new card and all works fine). I knew sonds mad .

No they can't (your issue may appear to have been fixed by drivers but if you saw lines before windows loaded then it was hardware related like a loose cable). The only graphics related software running when in the BIOS menu or displaying the boot screen is the BIOS code (which has its own display code which hasn't changed in years) and the firmware on the graphics card which unless modified by someone deliberately won't cause issues like this.

Thanks for all the support guys. Anyways, i do agree with Human Error, it cannot be the drivers. I have started the windows in safe mode, unninstalled all the drivers and then used Driver Sweeper to delete anything that was left behind by the drivers, and still i got no luck. I have tried the dvi cable i was using on a different computer and it worked fine, so im guessing the dvi cable is fine. I have used before dvi with this screen and it worked perfectly, so i dont think thats the problem though. And Human Error, what do you mean "take a screenshot of the corruption" ?
