Hey guys, ive just signed to the forums, but im a daily reader for years! I have this old school desktop for 6 years now, so the HD6950 is that old.
Got from work this evening and started the computer, then i heard some strange noises, sparks and a burnt smell. Tried to restart and no video. Plugged in onboard VGA and worked.
I got off the card and dismounted the cooler and this is what i got:

Is there any hope for it??
Oh, forgot to mention: i unlocked it to the HD6970 a long time ago and never overclocked

Doubt it. Looks like there are too many components that got fried. Plus there's no telling what else is damaged even if you could repair what you can see. Traces can be burnt, SM caps could be blown, etc.

Time for an upgrade for you ;)

arg. the board is toast. you're not supposed to let the magic smoke out.

i'd consider replacing the power supply too.

Thanks for the quick response!
Thats what i thought!
Its not a main PC, so im thinking about upgrading just the VGA, maybe a GTX 960. But im afraid the cpu is gona bottleneck the performancea lot!

Dont have enough money for a full upgrade right now, so i might just get the 960 now and new cpu+mb+ram later this year!

Nice toast you got there.

I think the cpu will be okay with a 960, just overclock it (cpu) if you can.

Power Supply is a XFX 650W pro, so its a good PSU!

That will be enough until you get a new system. Buy 960 with 4gb btw. not the 2gb version.

I'd check the slot it was in real good and the parts around it... looks like that may have pulled some current through when it went.
And, you might wanna test the slot, with a cheap card, before you plug in a another GPU.

Memory vrm popped. That vrm also happens to be the generally neglected cooling wise. Judging by the sticky memory pads, it's a ref card? You got a decent amount of life out of it considering... gpu has gone to gpu heaven.

That a bios chip to, that probably took a hit too, i bet making it a 6970 put some extra strain on it too.

Yep! That little thermal pad on those can dry out, fall out and it can be overlooked when re-seating the cooler.
