HD7970 vs GTX670 (specifically these two models)

If prices were same, which one would you buy?

HIS HD7970 reference or
Palit GTX670 JetStream

?

Driver support, general stability, overclockability, and everything considered.

Note: I will never be buying two cards, so all I care about is the single card driver stability.

As to the bitcoin thing, I don't see the value in that any more, as local power costs are higher than what bitcoin pays, nevermind the value of the card itself.

I understand you point because I also have a Bitcoin farm, but since the price per BT is so low at the moment the 670 it´s a better option.

I like my 7970's but the 670 looks pretty awesome! If I were purchasing now, I think I would go with 670(s) and try Nvidia for the first time in years.

Yes, i would not change me recommendation. GTX670 is also more power-efficient. Sure, it's only like 100W at max, and 20W on average...




If single monitor, there is no question in my mind...multi-monitor use, then my opinion may change, but it'd still be an Nvidia card, but instead of GTX670, I would use 3x GTX 670. ALthugh, I am waiting to find out from users how well that config works...because I am very much done with AMD cards right now. My 3rd 6950 for TriFire should finally be back from RMA today, and I think I'm gonna sell it.

Either you're getting one heck of a deal on a 7970, or ripped off on the 670.


Either way, the 670 is an excellent choice if all you want is gaming. A subjective (based upon my experience, though it can be debated) is as follows:

670:
= Comparable gaming performance
+ Lower power consumption
+ Generally better driver support
- Lower GPGPU functionality
- Very limited availability

7970:
= Comparable gaming performance
+ Actually available for purchase
+ GPGPU beast
- Higher power consumption
- Generally poorer driver support

I have a 7970 Gigabyte Windforce Edition, it definitely overclocks like a champ. If I were to do it all over again, I'd go Nvdia GTX 670, just because the price point seems better, but at the time I was trading in a GTX 590 which had broken and had the option to get store credit and hop to a 7970, when the 600 series hadn't been released yet.

Well I have owned both cards and the performance is pretty much the same too me really, the HD7970 overclocked more for me though, temps were about the same (60C - 69C) but fan was louder being a reference design

In certain games the HD7970 ran a bit more smoother like Metro 2033 and BF3 ran a bit more smoother with the GTX 670

TBH I would go which ever is cheaper which I'm guessing is the GTX 670, both cards are great either way

I wouldn't buy a reference 7970 due to noise. The 670 Jetstream will be much quieter.

If your monitor is a 27" (2560x1440 res), the 7970 is the more powerful performer in general.

But, starting from scratch, I'd get the custom 670 over a reference 7970.

SO after reading the Asus top DCII 670 gtx 2gb review here ... the question really comes down to two things,

1 - multi screen set up?
2 - do you want to over clock it with a lot of head room?

(1 == yess && 2 == yes)
then the 7970 is the way to go for you

(1 == no && 2 == yes)
670 gtx

(1 == yes && 2 == no)
7970 (better multi screen set up driver and stability)

(I just bought the 670 gtx, and got rid of my 7970 ... it works great ... just LOUD when under load with ref cooler and design )

Also GTX 670 uses less power, haves better OC possibilities and better cooling system (lower noise and more effective). Finally look at prices GTX 670 Jet Stream in Europe costs from 378 € while reference HIS card costs 396 € (prices at the end of this page: http://buy.fudzilla.com/?cmp=723284&cmp=776907#xf_top ). So take Palit card

To be frank, having dealt with both cards I wouldn't touch the 7970 with a 10 foot pole. I'm glad there's some people that haven't had issues but for the many that have a 670 would be like the second coming of Jesus.

If bitcoin didn't exist I would definatly get the 670. I want a 670 too. Currently I make $50 a month but I live in an are with lower power cost.

i have both and they are both great cards ... get what fits your need ... if that is 3 or 4 lcds surround ... 7970 .. if you have a single set up ... then 670 gtx is the way to go all day long.

Also, don't hate the 7970 - it's not a fault prone card like some people make it out to be. It's been out for 5 months now, the GTX 6xx series for about a month or so. There will be folk from both sides with duff cards and things that don't work. But right now, far more folk have had the 7970, therefore given the same level of 'breakdown' more 7970 faults will have been reported. Just the other day a guy on TPU said his GTX 670 had already died on him.

Let's not muddy waters with FUD about the 7970 (and this is from someone who's trying desperately not to buy two 670's to replace a 7970 - because crossfire is not so hot).

The GTX670, no question. Just upgraded from dual 570s to 670s and they are sick! IMO, Nvidia has a better track record with driver improvements as well.

I guess they use the "second coming" line differently in your country. I'm not hating on the 7970 because of how "some people" make it out to be. I'm going by my personal experience reinforced by seeing that many many others have had the exact same issues. Again if you haven't had problems good for you but personally I think they're a fucking disaster. It's probably all software but at this pace it'll take a year for those issues to be sorted out. Where as nvidia is already testing the fix for the single major bug I've seen - the vsync stuttering. And as you pointed out, given the release times for the respective cards it's very telling which company you can expect better driver support from.

A 79X0 card just isn't a smart buy. I try telling people. They buy the cards anyways, they have instant problems and go back and buy nvidia. This has been my personal experience thus far. I'm sure there's plenty of people that have had a more positive experience.
