hi all of you in the past week i see the forum in idle mode ,so i made up this and feel free to dream about 28nm gpus 7months earlier:):toast:

since the 69xx are not a worthy replacement of 58xx im gonna stick with my 5850 and see 2x jump in perfomance then decide

Well, I expect to see a GPU with ~6950 performance at ~5770 power consumption and that'd be the card I'd probably pick :D

With 2x power connectos on 560Ti and 1x on HD5770 i find that very unlikely. There were even models that were powering from PCIe 16x only.

Lols:) 560Ti is actually coming close to double the consumption.

Consumes roughtly 80% more than a 5770^^

OT: I'm hoping on a increase in efficiency like the one from going from 55nm to 40 (4870 -> 5870).
I'm not totally sure whether thats realistic though, as it seems like the leakage in these smaller processes isnt reducing quite as much as the transistor size(hence Intel coming with a different kind of transistor).

I want to be able to get a 7870, that is equivalent to 2x6970's in performance for $300.

+1 I don't really care about the power efficiency. I want more performance.

yes, performance only comes from being more efficient to pack more into a smaller area or similar area at the same power & heat, else things will get more expensive

efficiency also comes from rearranging the core design, 4870->4890, which of course is more performance

4870 -> 4890 is not rearranged. It's exactly the same core with more capacitance around it, so it can achieve higher clocks.

That thread is going to end up one geek correcting other geek all the time :)

I see what you did there.

Honestly I would just like something that edges out the current 69xx line, keeps power consumption low, and is a reasonable upgrade from my 5850 (thinking of Xfiring that as it is).

7 series should have quite a boost right?

6 series is 5 mixed with a bi of tech from next gen as node wasn't ready?

I reckon it will be epic. Hope nvidia get competitive on time as well. Fermi gets better and better the lower the node. But I don't want some power hog :/

guys do not expect to see quantum leaps in performance.

Quantum leaps happen when NEXT-gen consoles are released. since now MAJOR games are released on the XPC3(xbox- PS3- PC) platform the games on the PC will be identical(but better marginally) on the PC.

Therefore companies cannot create the NEXT big thing unless we have the next GEN consoles.

To give an example when the Ps2 was released Nvidia came up with great(for that year cards) which left the previous generations in the dust.

WHen Ps3/Xbox came out the same thing happened again.

Unless we get Xbox720 or Ps4 you will get gradual improvements

well, HD6970 had a new architecture and 30% more performance than HD5870, but that was because 40nm was holding it back.

I expect NEARLY DOUBLE of 1536 Shaders in VL4W arrangement in the flagship HD7970

You won't get the massive leap you're expecting. You'd normally get a 30% increase in performance between the die shrink and the architecture changes. Because of the die hold up we only got half of that with the 69xx series. We'll get the other half with 7xxx. This die shrink hold up has created the first instance I can recount where it really does pay to wait for the next thing. I'm skipping both the 5xx and 6xxx series cards. The performance boost is just too small for the money.

Well it depends. HD5850 was roughly twice as fast as HD4870. Things changed with HD6000 series as they provide just moderate boost over HD5000. I hope things will change and that HD7870 will be twice as fast as HD5850/HD6870.

That would be called a 7970. Remember the new names!

2x6970's doesn't have to be a 7970.

Why can't a 7870 be like 2x6970's, and then a 7970 would be like 1 6990 + 1 6970

But on a serious note, I banking that a 7870 will be equivalent to 2x6870's,
with an extra 30% performance on top of each card, for around $300.

I actually hope that they change the name scheme for their next gen gpu's. 3k, 4k, 5k, 6k series, gets to be zzzzzz after a while imo.

Maybe come up w/ names similar to their processors, Athlon, Phenom, Bulldozer and Llano are all awesome names for components.

So ye, definitely would like to see the name scheme change with the next gpus.
