Or at the very least, when you use a tool like HD Sentinel, it will tell you Power On Time. If you bought it "new" and it shows more than 5 hours run time, it's not "New".

As far as I know a 'refurbished' hard drive is just tested and nothing much else other than perhaps a cleaning.

It's okay if these discs are reliable. I just read that they are bad.
It will say it on the label.
I guess that's the easiest way to try.

Fine. Then look how many hours it's been on since then, and do some basic math. Since you've used it, you can't be exact, but if you leave your computer on for 8 hours a day, see how long HD Sentinel says it's been powered on. if it says around 50-80 days, that's reasonable. If it says 418 days, it's a refurb.

I once bought an WD black, 640GB, it had a few h on it when I got it, it's safe to say it lasted me upwards of a decade before selling it...

How much did that 640TB drive cost you?
How much did you sell it for?

As for OP, I use CrystalDiskInfo to look at my drives' stats. I haven't bought a drive in awhile, but I did get a 3TB drive that was "refurb" and it had 24 hours on it.
