I have read an article from a a site called hardware-test (http://hwt.dk/literaturedetails.aspx?TeaserID=9158#top)(In Danish)

They have made a test of a Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ (1 TB - 7.400 rpm - 32 mb cache)

They claim, that it is faster than a WD RaptorX 10.000 rpm disk.

Have anyone of you guys and girls tested or own such a HDD
- and if yes - is it really that fast ?

Access times will be higher most likely. Though it makes sense that transfer rates are higher due to higher density.

hmm well...3 plates at 334 Mb, Serial ATA 2 and the 32 MB cache seems to make the difference.....it looks like the Raptor´s, even in RAID 0, eats dust......:wtf:

It's not sata 3. It's sata 300= sata 2

which raptor/s was/were tested?

would be nice to run 2 of those 1Tb drives in raid i guess :)

im looking to do something about my HDDs situation. im runing out of space on the 120 (dont laugh) and the raptor is full as well.

i was thinking to keep the baby raptor as my boot/games and grab 2 x 500g Wd's and do a little raid with them.

:toast:

in real life usage u wont notice the difference.. the best way of speeding up your hardrive is to keep it empty.. he he

hardrives are the things we wait for nowadays.. everything else has left them behind long ago.. bigger yes.. faster.. no.. least not in any meaningful way..

Well SolidState Disks are here. So I guess the days of the old HDD are almost gone. They just need to reach an affordable price point.

yes but i cant see that coming for quite some time.. least not at the capacity we want the bloody things.. i recon we are stuck with ancient mechanical spinning disks like it or not..

Fastest HDD (other than SSD) would be SAS drives running around 15k rpm. I read a test report on two at raid 0 and a pricey controller, and they hit around 300+ mb/s in hddtach.

Yes that right....I have a xSeries IBM x3650 server (vmware test-server)
with 4 x 73.4 GB 15K SAS drives - running in 2 RAID 0 pairs......
and 4 x 146.8 BG 10K SAS drives in RAID 5
(running with a ServeRAID 8K RAID adapter with 256 MB cache on the controller)
The disk system on this baby is fast.....

You WILL notice a difference. Games will load faster, windows will load faster, Games like Neverwinter NIghts where you have lots of loading, you will notice a big difference between some SATA 7500RPM w/8MB cache vs a Raid 0 Array of Raptors w/16Mb (32mb in RAID) cache. Big difference. IF you are not seeing a difference then something is wrong with your raid controller or setup.

Currently Fujitsu SAS drives are some of the fastest drives out. SAS @ 15,000RPM is obviously faster then SATA Raptors @ 10,000 RPM. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822116017

Will it make your FPS increase? No. But everything loads and saves faster.

So, you can put 15K HDs in regular computers with a controller and they will run fast like they are supposed to in server MBs?

OMG! Why have I been talking about putting a 10K HD in my (hopefully) future computer then?

Well...if money is no issue......
But in real life there is not a hole lot difference between 15K SAS
and a good RAID 0 with two 10K WD Raptors....

Besides...startup times for a system with SAS controller is a heck lot longer

Oh, I didn't know that. My friend tells me that it takes him a minute to start up windows & about 45 seconds to load a game on his 7.2K HD that he has on his $2.5K gaming computer. That seems a little long to me. What do you guys think?

Are there any cons to putting 2x Raptors in RAID0, other than if you lose one you lose both?

what game are we talking about they all vary..

i do know it takes me two minutes to get into windows and it all finish loading.. silly things like the CCC control thing takes ages..

with a new virgin windows install with nothing added it takes 30 seconds. thats with one normal 720 hardrive..

we wait for hardrives.. till solid state arrives at affordable prices thats life..

High end like Crysis.
