Personally, I prefer heatsinks with a flat base. If the base is actually flat, or flat enough, as we can never see true flat, it should, by my logic, perform better than HDT. The heatpipes are often scratched up and unrepairable because you can wear down the already thin metal in the pipes beyond usefulness, and a flat base cooler makes contact with the entire surface area of the processor, not just the parts where the heatpipes touch. Even if you get a heatsink with a crappy base from the factory, you can fix it with a few hours of monotonously lapping the base to a much flatter, more efficient finish.

I know on alot of the chips the IHS on the cpu itself is curved. If the heatsink is flat on the surface you would have to rely on both pressure and the thermal paste to transfer the heat as its only efficiently transferring heat in the direct center of the IHS. I believe its Prolimatech?? that made their megahalems heatsink base concave to match that of the IHS for full contact.

Either way I would still go with DTH. As you transfer heat energy between solids theres always a loss.

i vote flat based hsf
since sometimes the base aint flat enough.
with flat based i can lap them without any worry

i agree on the DTH - if not made perfectly from the beginning, they suck. it would be ideal to be able to lap both the IHS and the cooler base.

on the second thought, it would be perfect if the manufacturers soldered a 1mm thick cooper plate to a DTH base...

I've lapped a few processors myself, but eventually I quit doing it due to being too lazy to bother. I do still lap heatsinks though... I change them less often than processors. I usually get a good heatsink and it lasts forever... I had that AC Freezer 64 pro for years until I upgraded to the Thermaltake Big Typhoon in a straight trade, heh.

Benchmark Scores There are no marks on my bench
a little thin layer of copper over the HDT to make it flat doesnt kill efficiency when you consider the layer of thermal paste :p
