The idea is to use a helicopter to scout for a rover and find the best path to avoid obstacles and find interesting samples. Since the atmosphere on Mars is so much thinner than earth, they've been testing in a vacuum chamber.

There used to be a flight simulator which allowed you to build craft and test them in the martian atmosphere... X-plane I think. It was pretty cool.
