Hellblade [Official Site] is coming to PC! Developers Ninja Theory (DmC: Devil May Cry, Odyssey to the West) have been working on getting their recent production Hellblade to the PC platform. Obviously with these developers we can expect some pretty hefty melee gameplay and some deep character stories. They claim that this release is going to be an Indie-AAA title and bringing out a graphically advanced game worthy of AAA status, all through independent development. Double Fine will be publishing this one, and it’s all being pushed through with the new Unreal Engine 4.

Frankly, what I’ve seen so far from the concept art and art screens, we’re going to see a pretty ace production. They definitely have the brawn for graphics; we’ll just have to hope the gameplay and storyline get just as much attention. The protagonist in Hellblade’s story will be Senua, a female character, whose concept art looks utterly godlike. All we know is that it’s to be based on a Celtic myth, and follow Senua’s personal journey through the underworld.

    Teaser below:

One of the concepts I applaud them for doing is the "underworld" Senua travels through is largely in her mind, as a way to deal with the challenges of her rough world.

Today, she would be schizophrenic. Back then, the underworld and demons. I find it fascinating how they use the lack of understanding of mental health at the time, and show how these things were interpreted and dealt with in ancient Celtic times.

The whole studio is less than 2 dozwn people, yet their attention to detail on things like facial movement, and research with psychiatric doctors is impressive.

This is the studio that gave us Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. Hellblade is to be their first self-funded and released title.

I want to play this game. It looks like (not much but) Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Just there are a lot of lighter places in Hellblade. Damn that torches and their sounds. :D

We need more games like Heavenly Sword, Darksiders, Odyssey to the West et al. Not enough proper oldschool adventure/hack-y games these days.

I thought I'd post a new trailer. Their Developer diaries are fascinating, and the devs are very open about progress and steps taken. You also get to pick a lot of in-game footage up. Just go to the link in the beginning of the OP.

I am extremely stoked for this game, like very few others have ever grabbed me!

Combat development diary. This is looking most impressive! I've been most impressed from the beginning by this small studio's 100% commitment to putting out a fantastic product.

Hellblade is still being worked on, and still my most anticipated game ever...including all of 2004 when I was awaiting Rome: Total War! The release date is sometime in 2017. Here is a message from the studio:

@RCoon has the official developer site link in the OP.

No. They are doing everything with a small studio less than 20 people, and will self-release when it's releasable, not when a publisher tells them. As their lead says, it seems longer because they announced what they were doing from the beginning, whereas traditionally, we would now be getting the "it's coming" announcement from a publisher. So really, they are doing fine.

To be fair a 3 year turnaround time for a AAA title released independently with two dozen people at hand is what I'd expect. Otherwise we end up with things like Raven's Cry (45 employees, 2 years development, 1 year delay).

If it comes out before 2018 I'd be surprised.

They are still talking later this year for release. All the levels, gameplay and story are in place. Now it is being fine tuned.

As it gets closer to being finished, the Dev Diaries continue to amaze me with what this dedicated team is accomplishing with a shoestring budget.

And a little more insight into the game, as of April:

On Tuesday Hellblade was announced as having an August 8th release date, after almost 3 years of development.

Surprisingly, it will go at a very reasonable $29.99 cost. Those that wish can pre-order at GOG or Steam.

Me too. I have taken a chance and pre-ordered because A) This has been a good studio in the past, B) they are self-publishing, so it is not on some mandatory "before it's ready" corporate release schedule, and C) because I followed the development from the beginning and know what dedication they put into this. Even if it has bugs still, these devs will fix quickly.

    Solaris17 says thanks.
