Help buying a GPU for a friend

I need to buy my friend a graphics card for his birthday
I need a card that would play almost all the new games on low-medium settings?

His PC specs are: (from what i remember)
Intel i3 (something)
4GB DDR3
dont know about hard drive? let say 500gb

Intel media accelerator lol <--- thats why i need to get him a graphics card
he plays on 1080p!
Gigabyte h55 mobo
500w psu

As far as i know.. most games that he would be playing would be: (low - medium settings)
Assassins creed brotherhood
Splinter cell conviction
Metro 2033
Just cause 2
Homefront

I m on a budget of $80
can someone find me an alright graphics card from this website http://www.trademe.co.nz/

you should be able to pick up a second hand 5770 / gtx460 for around that price, if your lucky.

GTX260/250.... there a bit older but you should definetly be able to find them for $80.... 4850/70... maybe even a 550.

8800 > 9600 > 240

in terms of performance overal, 8800GT wins by around 10% over 9600.

I have seen builds that use a low end i3 processor, and they have clocked it to 4Ghz with the exact same mobo. It might not be 2500k fast, but at 4Ghz, it chews though almost every game you throw at it. Ask your friend if you can borrow his system for a few days and overclock it. If he agrees then you can pair its rig up with a more powerful graphics card then just something around 5770 level.

my $2 on the matter. just because its an i3 doesnt mean it cant get a good overclock. Obviously performance might suffer a little for the more quad core optimized games. but performance is second to none when running at 4Ghz

Dont buy a 9600 or 8800 There Not DX11 sense he is using 1080

BTW I use a 5750 and it will play Crysis on high with no AA 1920 x 1080

no offence.... but low end cards dont run DX11 anyway....
and considering hes currently using onboard, this will already be a massive step up.

(GTX560/70.. or 6950 is mid range in my books.... anything less is low end.)

EDIT:

from the looks of that website, your better off buying else ware. those prices are horrendous! have a look through the FS threads on TPU you might find the perfect deal.

its not high end

580/6970 would be high end.

8800GT would not be a bad buy IMO if it was in fact very cheap. IE less then $40/$50. but yes, for $80 you should be able to do a lot better, your best bet is to look at second hand cards from last generation... you can find some very good deals.

or 450 with minimal 1 gig memory. for today gaming take 1 gig or above since many games eat much memory

1GB would be all thats needed with a mid range GPU.... you really only need more when your pushing higher resolutions....(larger then 1080p / multi screens) or moding games with larger textures.

he should be more focused on the card itself then the amount of ram it has, a 560 for example with 768mb ram would be more than adequate.

yep, previously i run 460 with 768mb it run well, but if you could get the same gpu with more ram it would be better

If prices in NZ is similar to AU then either GTX460 or HD6850 (never thought of that one eh you guys?) runs neck to neck but parts prices in Australia costs more so you're looking at $160 minimum (brand new of course), could give the HD6790 a try though.
