Help! Can't get 4k @ 60hz

Hi guys,

Been having a huge problem for the last two months now -- and it's really beginning to frustrate me to no end!!

From my 1080Ti to my 4k Sony TV I have ALWAYS (in the past) been able to get 4k at 60HZ, even with max colour settings & HDR.

However for the last month my Sony 4k Android TV will not pick up a signal as soon as I increase the refresh rate over 30HZ. (TV runs on the Android operating system a bit like a modern smart phone) .

--------

What does work:

TV HDMI signal set to "standard" (in TV's settings, not windows or any PC settings):
-1080p 60hz
-4k but only up to 30hz

TV HDMI Signal set to "enhanced": (in TV settings)....:
-1080p 60hz only

-------------

For a start-- the above seems back-to-front.

I should be able to set the HDMI signal format on TV to "enhanced". Then in Windows set resolution to 3840 x 2160 @60hz and there should be no issues. But I'm having no luck

I don't get a picture.

Here's what I've tried so far:
1) Replacing the HDMI cable with a brand new one (the new one is HDMI 2.0 certified and can do 4k at 60hz). (from cables.co.uk)
2) Ensuring TV's HDMI signal is set to "advanced" and not "standard" format. <-- with "enhanced" I can't even get 4k 30hz (TV signal format needs to be on 'standard' even just to get 30hz at 4k).
3) Uninstalling ALL Nvidia, AMD & Intel GPU drivers using the "DDU" utility. (as posted on EVGA support forums). Rebooting, then re-installing only the Nvidia software/drivers.
4) Running a full in-depth virus scan using the latest edition of AVG & running a full Windows Defender scan.
5) Resetting TV back to factory defaults. (this does not remove updates received by the TV - which is currently on version 6.0.1 and is reporting as fully up to date & no new updates are currently available).
6) Checked that intel's iGPU is disabled in system BIOS. (and confirming this by checking in Windows that it's not displayed in GPU-Z -- which it isn't)!
7) Tried HDMI ports 1 & 2 on TV (there are 4). (despite the fact the TV settings give option for "standard" and "enhanced" for ALL ports)
8) Tried setting the TV as the "primary" display device. & tried disconnecting my monitor.

Note: I do have an older AMD Radeon HD 6950 installed. But as mentioned above I uninstalled it (not physically). It was only re-installed automatically from Microsoft Update as part of boot process after I exited safe-mode. (I performed the clean uninstalls with DDU in safe-mode). I also currently have NO displays attached to the AMD card. I have no issues on my 2560 x 1440p monitor.

Please help. I am at a total loss.

Thanks,

Nick Peyton

I have no idea. But I'd download the latest manual for your TV and the latest Readme for your version of the Geforce drivers and search for unsolved bugs etc.

Sorry for the confusion. I've updated my post above.

How to you know the model? (Edit: nevermind, I see it in his post now)

...the 75" model does support 3840 X 2160/60P

Every of them does, it was added later to the FW.

I still think it is the HDMI cable. There is a load of crap with them, even some "certified" probably by banana god cannot handle 4K 60FPS 4-4-4.

I wonder if the firmware got reset or something?

You could imagine the flood of rage, it is a popular model range still...

This case must be unique, as you see the EDID allows to set the resolution in windows, so obviously it is there, it just goes black as out of sync...

I've seen some posts that disabling HDMI audio in nv control panel helps. Well it could be...

The TV did not originally support 4k 60hz out of the box

However this was enabled in a firmware update in 2016. To enable it one must go to "settings" then "external inputs", "HDMI Signal Format" then change from "standard" to "enhanced".

It also worked perfectly OKAY before. It's only recently I haven't been able to get 4k @ 60hz.

Okay something VERY VERRY odd is going on.

1) I disabled all PCI-E graphics cards using switch on my motherboard. (so it's like they aren't even physically plugged in).

2) I used DDU to uninstall (in safe mode) ALL nvidia, AMD and even intel display drivers.

3) I Rebooted machine between each uninstall.

4) I used Windows Update to re-install latest version of ONLY the intel display drivers for iGPU. (All PCI-E graphics cards still physically disabled via motherboard).

5) As far as Windows is concerned. The ONLY graphics hardware I have is my i7 7700k's iGPU.

6) Now here's what's REALLY odd. --> If I:
a) Set display to "show only on 2" which is the Sony TV I get no signal to the TV (even at 1080p).
b) If I have display set to "extend the desktop" and I disconnect my ASUS monitor's 'display port' connection the Sony TV ALSO loses it's signal.
c) If I reboot the computer with ONLY the Sony TV plugged in I get NO signal. As soon as I plug the ASUS monitor into the display-port BOTH the Sony TV & my ASUS monitor suddenly & strangely BOTH get a picture/signal.

What the heck is going on.. this is just too weird.

I do not have anything complicated going on. Connection is straight from PC into TV & monitor with nothing in-between. No adapters or extensions or home theatre systems or anything. Just 2 cables normal cables. Straight connections to TV and monitor from PC.

If I had this problem, I'd be tearing my hair out, too. Luckily, I have an old 1080p Panasonic plasma, so no problem. :)

Firstly, it's definitely not your HDMI cable. It either works or it doesn't and as you get a perfectly good 1080p/60 picture the cable is fine. Check out this article explaining why: https://www.cnet.com/news/4k-hdmi-cables-are-nonsense/

Did this happen immediately after a TV firmware update or GeForce driver update? If so, there's a big clue, right there. If driver, then try rolling back, if TV firmware, you've had it.

It's also possible that a Windows update could do it, but it's much less likely.

Do you still have that AMD card plugged in? If so, remove it post haste, as driver weirdness can result. Plug it back in later once you've troubleshot it and it's working fine again.

I just borrowed another cable from a friend. And HEY PRESTO it's working perfectly.

I bought my brand new cable from this company below: (I recommend everyone and anyone NEVER purchase a cable from this company).

Here is a link to their website (the product page for the ACTUAL cable I bought) and picture of the site:

http://www.cablesuk.co.uk

product page for my cable:
http://www.cablesuk.co.uk/5m-HDMI-2.0-Cable_Smallest-Head-SUPREME-GOLD-'In-The-World'-p926.html

And here's a copy of the email I've just sent them:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Cables UK (Gill),

I have just tried another HDMI cable at 4k 60HZ and it works perfectly.

Therefore I know now that the cable is definitely the problem.

I have also done some further research on HDMI 2.0 cables (which is what my cable is advertised as on your website) and here is what it says:

“An HDMI Cable, that is tested against the version 1.4 High Speed testing specification (10.2Gbps), will support 4K content @ 30Hz . However, 4K support beyond 50Hz (typically at 60Hz in advanced 4K UHD TVs) can only be supported using an 18Gbps (17.8Gbps)
capable HDMI cable (or a v2.0 HDMI cable)”.

On your website for the cable that I purchased it is advertised as BOTH lab tested up to 18Gbps (17.8Gbps) AND HDMI 2.0 certified including ALL HDMI 2.0 features.

This leaves only three possibilities:

  • The HDMI cable you sent me is faulty.
  • The HDMI cable you sent me is not correctly advertised on your web site.
  • You accidently sent me the wrong cable

Which ever of the above is the problem. This is not my fault.

Under the Consumer Protection Act I have the right to have this corrected.

Can you please send me a new cable which has all the features that were advertised for the cable that I purchased:
    -All HDMI 2.0 features
    -Lab tested to 18Gbps (17.8Gbps)
    -4K

Also in the interest of making sure my new cable definitely works I also propose you send me a shorter cable. 3 metres. And something a lot thicker than the very thin cable you sent me last time.

I fear many of your cables are not in fact lab tested properly (as claimed) so I would like the best chance possible for my new cable to work without any further frustration/communication via email.

If you will not send me the new cable then can you please issue me an immediate refund, so that I might purchase something elsewhere.

    Thank you.

    Nicholas Peyton

P.S very angry and frustrated at the time I have wasted with Nvidia and Sony support representatives due to false/inaccurate advertising on your website.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------
(That company was so bad they refused to even discuss the issue when I called them. And kept saying I'd hear back by email today). I've waited all day -- and still no email.
------------------------------------------------

So I've just cut my losses and bought one from Amazon:

My new cable (purchased today).

Untitled.jpg

Now if this doesn't work properly I think I'll jump off a bridge, lol. Delivery should be tomorrow.
