Help choosing Power supply.. How many 12v rails?

I am looking for a new PS to replace my very good but noisy PCP&C 510SLI. This will be powering a media PC so I need it to be quiet. Its an older cpu and board, FX-60, DFI SLI-DR, 8800GT. Not really a gamer machine, its going to be a down loader, storage PC and media player. It will have about 6-8 drives though so I figure why not get a 750w? Should I get one with a single 12v rail? I don't know that much about power supplies. I just need it to be quiet reliable and modular cabling. Any suggestions? Thanks.

i suggest a corsair 400watt seems to be the best psu for that job honestly i actually like the PCP&C but if its to loud the corsair might be a better option installed one the other day thanks to kurosagis prodding to use it in a customers rig and it was silent and delievered plenty of power a nicely loaded quadcore rig

My HX 620 is seriously quiet. Can't hear it over my Noctua case fans. Always a good buy.

i would think the 450 better fits the needs of the rig tho 510 vs 450 both top notch brands if he was more of a modder id say change out the fan in the PCP&C and call it a day but yea most corsairs are quiet and the HX are modular to boot

I can handle that. What fan should I go with? It looks to be an 80mm.

hmm ive got 2 80mm fans laying around there masscools still work as well let me look at the specs on them and ill get back to you ill send them for cost of shipping basically $2

Amount of rails doesn't matter really, you just want a shit ton of available amps : ]

My PSU has 6 12v rails, its my preference to use a multi rail PSU but at the end of the day just buy what suits you best : ]

( And don't buy cheapy tat, I spend 4 weeks researching PSUS, then 4 days searching for the right one at the right price, I suggest at least doing a bit of research on the PSUs your already looking at.)

well panther hes already running a PC power and cooling unit and there top of line as is just a little lound sometimes and corsairs are rock solid as well

but i figure a fan swap might work better for him i just have to look up the specs on the 2 fans i got to make sure they would fit the bill so to speak

why spend $70ish when u can spend $2 ish lol

id make sure that psu takes an 80mm fan first tho just to be on the safe side

the wires will have to redone on mine but thats a given anyway if u want it to fit properly

I'd normally say go for a fan swap too, but I tend to only do such things on older or cheaper PSUs.

I wouldn't touch this PSU til the waranty is void XD

To expensive to replace if it guffs up!



Not like monkeying around with a motherboard where the manufacturer can't really tell if you have or not, psus have a stick over one of the screws.

Could be fan is faulty or OP is just sound sensitive *shrugs*

Or everything else in his setup is quiet as hell and the PSU is just the loudest.

Can make it seem louder then it is.

( for example loudest thing in my system is chipset fan that's rated for 21db, probably only a db or two louder but its very noticeable to me, could be the high pitch mind you.

You can't go wrong with any Corsair PSU. Corsair CX400 should be enough for you.

I don't remember it being this loud when it was new but that was 5 years ago. I just built a pc form my nephew with a 750w silencer and it is pretty quiet. PCP&C just use smaller fans than Corsair and others. I think I have an 80mm case fan around here somewhere but If I need it I will PM you. Thanks for the offer.

your PCP&C is more than enough for you i would just keep that and mayb pop the case and throw some silent fans in it

Have you recently dusted the PSU? They really do get quite clogged up over the years. Only yesterday I had to take out the family PC's PSU, blast out the dust, and put some machine oil in the fan to make it stop grinding. After that, it went back to being a silent little OEM POS.
