Help finding SATA driver for Intel 865 chipset

I need either the bare drivers, or a compatible version of Intel Matrix Storage Manager/RST. The chipset drivers I downloaded only installed the IDE controller driver.

What board?
Usually you only need a third party sata driver for raid. ICH5 chipset driver takes care of everything else.
Here is the last ICH5 Raid edition. That might be what you're after.

ASUS P4P800-X. Unfortunately, no SATA drivers are provided on the ASUS site.

Unfortunately, this is not a RAID system. Just regular AHCI, which that driver does not support.

Right, so it runs in IDE mode and you can't change it? That's pretty dumb, tbh. You don't get the full speed of the SATA interface.

Uhm, you change between IDE, AHCI and RAID mode in the BIOS.
Note that if you're in IDE mode and change to AHCI, the OS won't boot.
There are ways around this, but you'll have to look that up yourself.

There wasn't native SATA drivers in Windows XP. One needed to load SATA drivers via a floppy drive to install XP.

The only option in the BIOS is to enable the SATA controller, I've looked through all the IDE/SATA settings and I've got the IDE controller set to "enhanced mode" instead of "compatibility mode" (which sounds similar to the settings for SATA controllers I've seen on more modern motherboards). I can't seem to find any AHCI drivers for this chipset, only RAID. Given that the motherboard doesn't support it, they're not likely to work. I may well not be looking in the right place, though.

AHCI was invented in the Windows Vista era. There are no special drivers for that chipset. It runs with the regular IDE driver.

You may install the Intel INF, but it just change names in the device manager, kind of useless.

What do you need the driver for? Doesn't the OS provide generic IDE one that works?

Hmm, I've looked into it a little more. It actually DOES have a driver installed, it just is shown with the same name as the IDE controller (Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers). The device ID matches up with the SATA controller.

Right. The ICH5 driver takes care of everything, just like I said in post 2.
