Help! I think my Gcard is dead!

My Gtx 680 that has been the backbone of my pc(s). The one part that lived through everything since I got it in 2013. Anyway I have been having problems with my PC since last night and I am pretty sure it is the issue.

I have been testing it and my PC for the past 2 hours. I can't even get it to show any kind of display aside from 3 times, and I can't even tell you how I even got that to happen. However, everytime for those 3 times it only lasted briefly; everytime starting normal would last maybe 5 minutes, then display would cut out with my monitor giving me the message showing no signal, while the g-card revs up very loudly and continues to run very loudly.

Actually that very loud revving up sound is what it makes almost everytime I tried starting it when it showed no display. Other times when it starts up with no display, it revs up just not as loud. The few times it actually worked and before when it worked normally it never made either sound.

I tested the rest of my PC by plugging my monitor directly into my mobo. Every single time through that it started normally and without hassle. I am going to test that again by leaving it on displayed through my mobo.

I just don't know what the problem is. I didn't really want to replace it yet, but I'm beginning to think dumping $450 on a 1070 is my only alternative. I really just hope it isn't actually something else and I have to pretty much rebuild my pc right away. It has been needing to be upgraded for awhile now, but I wanted to do it on my own time.

how old is the power supply?

Only way to find out if the card is truly dead is to put this card in another machine with a Fresher Power Supply that is at least 600W

Less than a year since I got it. That's too bad. I don't know anyone close I could do tests with. This could be a PSU issue?

On a side note I did test the PC for an extended period displayed direct from mobo. Not a single issue.

Have you cleaned it and put new thermal paste?

You're supposed to take your video card apart and apply thermal paste? I mean I wiped it over with cloth and q-tips and spray an air can to get dust out, but actually take it apart and do that? No. I didn't realize I was supposed to!

Well I had issues with my 7970 and it been just there for yrs and took off the wb and then put the stock and couldn't get it in to the bios would just show the splash screen then lose the video

Tried baking it twice still same then I cleaned it with 91% isopropyl alcohol and tooth brush and now it's working so not sure if it was the baking or cleaning Cuz it did finally work after that

No. I didn't realize I was supposed to!

There no requirement to replace TIM on a GPU. Its just a last ditch effort to try. Maybe taking it apart and putting it back might jar something so it will work. Odds are its dead, then maybe try bake it

It still has some life to it. It occasionally makes it all the way to the desktop, but the display ALWAYS dies and it just starts revving up again. I'll say this the gtx 680 is one hell of a card.

This is the best Solution- replace it- easiest for most to do than try to pull a HSF off a GPU.

Since I have a good idea about taking GPUs and CPU HSF off, I'd Buy a new card and then pull that 680 Apart clean the old thermal compound off and replace any pads and then Test it and relegate it as a backup GPU or Test GPU.

I'll probably replace it first, this is a good idea. I'd have to look up how to do all this, but it's better than burying the beast and forgetting about it.

Unfortunately I do not have another pc to test any parts on.

There are plenty of cheaper alternatives that outperform the 680. No reason to spend that much money if it makes you queasy. ;)

I don't think I want to go with a lesser card since I'll be upgrading the rest of my pc piecemeal I might as well take advantage of this issue and grab a decent card. Now the 1080 that pricing I'm definitely not ready to pay right now.

Ok, fair enough! There's nothing wrong with that logic at all. I just didn't want you to think you HAD to invest that much money in a new card.

What is the rest of your system? Is it in need of an upgrade, or just a want to do?

It's pretty much entirely in need of an upgrade. Even if most of my original parts weren't fried from my other house's power issues. I should explain I originally built my PC back in late 2013 a $1200 build. The house I lived in at the time had bad power issues which fried most of my parts one at a time. So with money getting tight I was compelled to use cheaper parts.

Anyway long story short on top of my parts being outdated they are mostly just average. I am not at my pc right now, so I can't give specifics. An average quadcore AMD cpu (probably high low end now), 8gb ram, msi mobo micro atx I'd say, rm750 psu, and a couple faulty hd's that still "work". I pretty much need to replace and upgrade everything in it except the psu if there are no issues with it. Like upgrade to 16gb ram, throw an intel cpu coupled with an atx mobo. I even had an ssd card in my old build too, so I wanna get one of those again too.

With the 680 it could still run pretty much every game in high. So it isn't the worst. Ran tw3, fallout 4, etc. Pretty well. The cpu is what was and is holding me back the most.

I agree with the others, your graphics card is most likely the culprit, such a shame you don't have the opportunity to try it out on another PC.

You don't have to replace the GPU TIM on it either. From the symptoms, it sounds very much like a crack in the circuit board - and one you'll likely never find either.

At 3 years old, it could still be under warranty. If it is, then I urge you to RMA it ASAP which will solve your problem.

Buying a new card at this point like you want to isn't a bad idea either since they perform so much better nowadays, even the lowish end ones. RMA it regardless if you can.
