Hey guys. I need some help. I sold by gpu radeon 6950 because of lack of driver support, some games dont even launch. I have core 2 quad q9450, so bottleneck is an issue. My psu is 500w and my motherboard asus p5q pro. Should i go for nvidia card? I heard ati radeons drivers are more taxing on cpu, is it true? I was looking for gtx 1050, rx 560 or r9 270x, 270x seems to be the best, but if this drivers issue is true..

Nah, there is no driver issue on both companies. 270X is faster but make sure your PSU have two 6-pin PCIe power connector, its an old card thus its more power hungry. What sort of games you going to play?

I just retired a 6950 but never had any problems with it driver-wise it maybe something else you were experiencing .

If budget is an issue you can get a 1050 TI pretty cheap for $145 or so.

Or you could find a used GPU here on the techpowerup in the for sale forum, that may be a better price to dollar purchase but won't have a warranty.

Personally I would save up money and replace that 9+ year old system. The 6950 was years newer than the chipset iirc

Did amd improve their dx 11 drivers? I am reading a lot lately, and their dx11 drivers seem to bemore taxing on the cpu than nvidias, vulkan and dx12 helps here though. I cant replace whole pc now, i sold 6950 and the plan is to add like 50 bucks and buy something cheap just to be able to launch games. Fifa 18 didnt work because of the drivers issue, same as battlefield 1, need for speed. Some worked, some didnt. I have ps4 too, so i just want to have a good alternative. Seems gtx 950 or 1050 is the answer now, i checked 750 ti too but it doesnt seem to be that much of a step up from 6950.

That age of a system. I would honestly make sure the motherboard bios is updated to the latest release or beta.

Being on a Radeon card, I'd go for a R 560, make sure it is not a R560D though.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Curious issues aside, what is your budget and what resolution do you game at?

About 110 bucks for a used gpu. I play at 1080p but dropping to 900p isnt an issue. I hate bitcoin miners by the way, just realized how much they inflated the market.

if gaming at resolutions of 1920x1080 and under then i recommend either a gtx1050to 4gb or rx560 4gb

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...ription=rx560&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...125916&cm_re=gtx1050ti-_-14-125-916-_-Product

the rx560 is a little cheaper but requires a 6 pin power connector. this should not be an issue sense you had an hd6950 witch is more power hungry. the gtx1050ti is about 10~15% faster but its also reflected in the price. it does not need a 6 pin power connector.

overall the rx560 can be overclocked to match the gtx1050ti if your budget is really tight. i have an rx560 4gb and have it overclocked to 1400mhz core and memory slider is at 2000 in msi afterburner. core clock will vary from card to card but i have not found an rx560 4gb that could not do 2000mhz on the memory. the rx560 4gb has the same memory on it as the rx570-rx580 8gb or even the same as the gtx1060 6gb cards if you get samsung memory. i do mining and have some cards that are the same so i can confirm this.

overall tho the gtx1050ti is going to work faster out the box but if budget is tight then the rx560 4gb is a decent card for 1080p and below.

If you're considering the 1060 , maybe try contacting the person selling one here on tech power up. maybe if you make an offer, he'll come down on his price. or just go with the newegg one which costs the same(those 3gb models seemed to not be all too popular based on the price theyre selling for)

But id go 1050ti if it was me, i have a 750ti and its nice
