Hmm maybe a GTX 970 would be the better choice? They're going for roughly 200 euro used right now? Is the extra 25 euro worth it?

Should be less than that. Locally I can buy a used GTX970 w/ box+accessories and a leftover 6mo. warranty for less than $200, which is roughly €170, and that's with our inflated prices.
You just need to look for better deals.

I'd buy one myself, but GTX1060 is already on the way =)

I meant that considering the prices of the GTX 1060s for myself would cost at least 300+ euro.. the R9 290x at 175 is a good performer considering the price ^^
the R9 290x is a bit better than the GTX 970. As far as 1080p gaming is concerned ,this is the last year you will be using it. All the titles from 2018 wont be able to run on it anymore. So you have until 2018 to get a new one.
For me with the Rx 480 i'm safe until 2019, even if i'll have to down the settings, i'm safe until then

I can't find any cheaper deals for the GTX 970 at all :/ I will continue to search and hope ^^
The R9 290x would be a better deal as it's cheaper and the seller says that he has never mined before so it could work out a bit better.
But it does require like.. 300W compared to the GTX 970 150/170W???

I will continue to hunt for the best prices for these gpus or maybe hunt down some GTX 980! If the price is right of course :p

What do yee think of the Xeon X5650 if overclocked to 4Ghz?!

Where did you get this info from? Is it like Y2K, when on Dec 31, 2017 exactly at 23:59:59.999 all sub 4GB cards will explode?

I'm sure you'll find a cheap 970 eventually. Check ebay outside your area, or TPU trade subforum. Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to find something in US and pay intl. shipping.

In regards to x5650 - great CPU, but not so great for games. Pain in the ass during summer. I used to own one, and eventually downgraded to i3-6100. I miss the old Westmere system, but I also don't regret building a newer replacement system.
Also don't forget that x58 enthusiast motherboards ain't cheap. My old system's innards pretty much paid off my new mini-ITX skylake rig.
I'd say, R3 1200 or 1300x is still your cheapest and the most reasonable option. At least it makes more sense financially, even comparing to buying a used Haswell or Ivy Bridge i5 system.

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
1070 alone is about 400 quid
400 is cheap ... freaking hell launch price was higher than that for me ... (around 549chf if i had to pay for it ) actually it's funny ... the launch price was 100 to 150$ higher than the rest of the world/msrp it lowered a little afterward and then with the mining craze : it's back to the launch price :p

oh well it's always funny to see how much higher the prices are in my country ... (i.e.: a 1080Ti is around 1200$ :p )

to the OP if the 290 wasn't used for mining and is in general good condition: it's not a bad deal ... i would still have my 290 that i paid 160$ used instead of my actual 1070 if it wasn't for a giveaway and later a thunderstorm
the 290 perform quite good (i had a 980 to replace it from a giveaway : no big difference ... a 970 wouldn't be worthy to be an alternative unless less than 120$ then )

The fact that after a year we are back to launch prices and 6 months ago things were cheaper shows that the hardware is overpriced currently.

nah 400 is cheap ... my launch price was way higher than that and nowadays the cheapest 1070 for me is around 100 to 150.- more than what you consider expensive (400) :p
if it's your actual price and if it was your launch price ... you are lucky ... that's only 25$ more than MSRP
edit: woops ... i noticed some 1070 are even up to +200.- more than that  (yep i.e.: the MSI Quicksilver OC is 607.-, even a basic card like the Aero is 100.- more than 400... man .... i want to have your pricing ... not fair  )
edit2: ah, even in second hand 450 seems to be the lower end ... might be a good time to sell my own 1070 then ... thanks mining craze and nvfans (or not .... i like my 1070)

it's overpriced since the beginning for me, and not only GPU, literally everything, hardware related is overpriced, you only get good deal 1. in second hand 2. during black friday 3. with a promotion at minimal -30% (and even at -30% you only reach MSRP) .... luckily i didn't have to pay for my 1070, if a 1070 was at 400 ... i would eventually take a second (not that SLI is something useful or needed.... recently )

What's wrong with your current system my I ask?
you really need to have something wrong to have a upgrade itch (even if it's a "cheap" upgrade itch?)

I get what your saying lol but you might be disappointed with your $500 upgrade over your current system honestly.

Well yeah you live in Switzerland. Your salary compensates for it :p I mean you can't compare prices in EU / UK / US because of different taxes / currencies also. I am looking at the fact that a 1060 / 1070 today costs here the same as it did 1 year ago which normally shouldn't be the case and a 480 / 580 is 1.5 - 2 times the launch price

For 500 GBP or 500€? Why going with GTX 1070 or GTX 1060? I recommend RX 470 4GB or RX 570 4GB - depending on which sells for the lower price. They'll rock at 1080p and even at 1440p
Possibly because RX570 is sloooooow. Precisely, slightly slower than GTX1060 - already a card that wouldn't be a significant upgrade for him.
So it's GTX 1070 or wait, simple.
