Help me buy a 3D monitor!

Well lads!

I'm currently looking into buying a 3D monitor, well.. for the last 4 years I wanted one... but none ever appealed to me and they were too expensive!
Now that AOC have released a nice budget 3D monitor at 27", it seems like the right time to buy one.

It's a decent looking monitor and the specs are pretty good too.

Can anyone give me good reasons as to why I shouldn't buy this monitor? I don't want to hear any gimmick crap or the personal I hate 3D or it's pointless!
I will be getting a 3D monitor weather you like it or not

I take it by "3D" you mean a 120Hz monitor with NVIDIA LightBoost?

In that case, I highly recommend the one I have, the Asus VG278HE 27" monitor, or its 24" brother.

There's another brand that's supposed to have shorter strobe flashes for sharper animation, but I can't remember which one it was off the top of my head. Could have been BenQ perhaps. There's also another monitor that does the LightBoost thing without being tied to nvidia and that's the best buy of all.

Check this out on why you really want LightBoost/strobing backlight for your gaming. It basically makes CRTs totally redundant by removing all motion blur!

That monitor appears to be passive 3D, so wouldn't that mean that everything is 3D 100% of the time including the desktop? A 120Hz "3D Ready" monitor that supports NVIDIA 3D Vision sounds like a better idea imo. Unfortunately, it seems that the monitors on your site are quite pricey as you can get the BenQ XL2420TX in the US for $470 instead of 495 Euro.

I can't afford to be spending 500 on a monitor! that's why this 300 euro monitor is very pleasing!

We get over priced over here so that's normal for everything to be more expensive over here compared to USA :/

Anyway, this monitor uses TriDef 3D using the same style technology that's in the cinemas! From what I've read, the 3D effect is very good and work with Nvidia 3D Vision!

I have not found any reason as to why I shouldn't go for this monitor!
I would prefer a proper 120hz display but that's not going to happen!

That monitor is NOT 3D Vision compatible! Don't get it thinking it is.

It's a niche product and likely to fade away completely. I think it uses a lenticular lens to achieve the 3D effect too, which basically looks awful.

It's a shame you can't choose any ASUS monitors as you can get a 144Hz 24" VG248QE for $300 USD (without the 3D Vision 2 kit though).

Hmm that's interesting, That's a pity :/ Although TriDef 3D has more compatible 3D supported games than Nvidia atm!
I've been doing some reading on the differences of active and passive 3D and it seems that passive will be alright?

I would prefer to buy an Asus monitor but I'd be spending nearly double to get one of them! That's just not worth it for me :/
AOC is really my only option atm!

I guess I was wrong about the AOC being "3D built into the screen" because it has glasses apparently, but still it is only 60Hz. At least it supposedly has an IPS panel, but I think you would only see 30 FPS in each eye unless this monitor works completely different.

For 3D gaming, active 3D (nvidia's system) knocks the spots off passive 3D. Also, nvidia's system works with just about every game out there, including very old ones.

Did you read the LightBoost article? I really explain it all there, plus some of the commenters made very useful posts, especially the one who's got his own website dedicated to modding ordinary monitors with strobing backlights.

i was just about to post the exact same thread, i was looking for one that can be used with the 3d glasses you get from the cinema. not sure this is possible but i remember reading a thread elsewhere last year where the guy paid extra to get the monitor that can be used this way with his 7950 and apparently the results were stunning.

if anyone has any info on the type of 3d monitor that supports this would be greatly appreciated

If the size is not a problem for you i suggest to get one like mine the Benq XL2420T, is 24 inch and nvidia 3d vision ready.

Ok, I get where you're coming from on price and yeah, 27" is a good size. My second monitor is 23" and I really notice the difference, especially with my dodgy eyesight, lol.

I don't think passive 3D is going to work with games, though. I might be wrong, but I've not heard of it. Can anyone shed light on this?

Exactly! My eye sight isn't the best either so I do need a bigger monitor to prevent eye strain

TriDef has been around since 2003 but never pushed 3D like Nvidia did, they have over 750 supported 3D games and 35 community modded profiles to add.
Also it has a 2D to 3D converter to give depth to 2D movies, photos and games if you wish to use it. Their main website appears to be quite decent and it doesn't appear to be rubbish by any means.

I was looking to buy a 27" IPS LED monitor before spotting this one.. so 3D is just a bonus to be realistic and if it works like a charm.. then that's a god send!

This friday, myself and my brother will probably go ahead and buy this! unless someone can prove that this 3D method will not work for 3D gaming and movie watching! other than that, There's no stopping me!

Ok then, get it, but just make sure that your games are on the supported list.

Also, I recommend getting it online, because the Distance Selling Regulations apply and you can return it for a refund if you don't like it. I'm assuming that the Irish version is the same as the English version, of course!

I checked on their supported 3D profiles list and every game that I play is supported which is great news ^^ Even some of my older games are supported which is a plus!

I certainly will buy online, I'll get it from Dabs.ie and they do allow for refunds so at least I can test it out and see if I like it or not.

I will come back to this thread once I test out the monitor to let you and others know if this 3D method is good or bad!

Hello again lads! I have some flipping beautiful news....
They are out of stock!!! even though they claimed to have 25 in stock :L
I tried scan.co.uk.. they were in stock, even slightly cheaper with a better delivery service....and the very next day I got an email saying they have none in stock and awaiting a lead?? what does that even mean :L

ANYWAY!
Since I'm forced to wait.. I'm considering going with an Nvidia 3D Vision set.. only maybe!
Here is the thing, I could get a manufacturer refurbished Acer HN274Hb for 280 euro which is cheaper than an AOC 27".

Only issue I have is, it's not an IPS screen :/ but it is a 120hz display with lightboost technology? Would yee recommend that I go ahead and get this instead? I really do want an IPS screen though!
Or.. should I just go and buy the AOC 23" 3D model and save 70 euro by doing so?

Unfortunately, it's not possible to get a 120Hz IPS monitor, because the pixel response time isn't fast enough. One is forced to compromise unfortunately.

I'm not sure I like the sound of a "refurbished" monitor. Chances are they've just given it a once over with a cleaning cloth and called it "refurbished". It wouldn't surprise me if it has some annoying faults with it. Double check the returns policy before you buy.

Is there really that much a difference in IPS compared to standard TN panals?

What do you make of that Acer model by the way? It would cost around 450-500 brand new!!

I've got one of those and it's very comfortable to view. It's especially good for those of us with less than perfect eyesight too, like me.

It's all down to preference, so it's not correct to make a blanket statement not to buy it.

But I've now decided on buying the Philips 27" Gioco 278G4DHSD/00

Very happy with reviews and seems to be slightly better in most cases! only 13 euro more expensive so that's not bad!

What are your thougths on this monitor??

Specs wise this would be quite a better thing to buy! and it's only 50 euro more expensive than the Philips monitor!!!!

It uses active 3D glasses too!

But, will it work on a computer @120hz???

Please let me know lads!! This TV just seems much more worth the wait?????

Well hello again lads

I've had a few days with my new monitor and I must firstly say that all my expected fears have been proven wrong! I'm simply very impressed with this monitor and the 3D is simply better than I thought it would be! " After quite a long time figuring everything out... "

The monitor I have chosen is the Philips Gioco Brilliance 278G4 27" 3D display.

I've played some games with it, it's quite good I must say ^^ Trine 2 is mind blowing! it's very impressive!!!!! and the best thing about this monitor is that it actually doesn't reduce the resolution! It's 1080p 60hz!!! VERY impressive

I've had some issues with certain games not being able to run... but I did an EDID override to make my system believe it's using an Acer passive 3D monitor that's supported by 3D vision and that made me capable of playing those games that TriDef 3D fails at

Also the AH-IPS display is beautiful!! The black levels are better than expected and rivals my big fancy HDTV!! Also the colours are simply beautiful too!

I look forward to buying my very first 3D movie " The Hobbit " I'm simply a very happy camper!!!
