if I go with the 7850, what type of PSU will I need?

I'm building a pc for a friend, he's gonna have that 7850 in single config with an i5 processor or a similar performing amd processor...

Not long ago I built a gaming PC for a friend of mine. Ivy bridge i5, 8GB RAM, Sapphire 7850 and went with a 600W PSU for a bit of future proofing, you can however go with a quality 500W PSU with no problems.
But the difference in price between 500-600-650W isn't a lot.

I was just going to say a good 500 would work, but repman beat me to it.
I would get something a little bigger (650) in case he ever decides to do crossfire or wants to add a lot of stuff to the rig.

What about the CPU? What's a good CPU and Mobo combo I could put with that 7850, that won't cost me too much?

I'm lookin @ i5s (3000 series vs 2000 series)

What's your recommendations and please recommend a Mobo with your choice of CPU pls. It's gonna help me speed up the process. I need to make sure the socket is compatible

3570k (3570 non-k if you're not going to overclock) on a decent Asus or Gigabyte z77 motherboard. Look trough the combo deals on that link and maybe select one if those, save a few dollars.

in fact, I've got all the parts I found on the internet, and if I put the 3570 cpu in there with the 7850 gpu, the bill goes above 1000$.

What would be the CPU GPU combo just beneath that notch ?

You don't need to get the 3570, it's just a great CPU and overclocker. The 3350p you linked is a quad 3.1 with no integrated graphics, which shouldn't matter to you. I'm not all that familiar with it, but I don't anticipate any bottleneck issue with a 7850. Other may be able to comment more on it.

While looking, pair any Ivy Bridge with a z77 mobo.

I would say go with the i5 3350 if it fits the budget.
GPU is the most important part when it comes to gaming, but when you have a game that is very CPU dependent you will be glad you went with the i5.

Its a lower end boars, but it has decent reviews on Newegg. With this potential setup plan on no OCing and no potetial crossfire, which shouldn't be an issue for you.

try and consider a B75 chipset still has sata3, usb3, 4 ram slots(most of them) and usually they are high quality built for business. downside no overclocking.

Well met gentlemen!

Don't want to hijack the thread, but i need help with something and it fits this topic already opened here. I will be very brief!

I am forced to upgrade only the video part an older PC.

The config is the following:

# Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.1GHz Brisbane on a MSI AM2 board with 1 PCIe x16 (2.0 compliant - this is important)
# 2GB 800Mhz Ram (this i could upgrade to a more performant CL4 4GB)
# Samsung 830 SSD 64GB
# Radeon 4830 512MB 256bit VGA card
# Enermax Cyclops (entry level) 405W

I know the wise thing to do would be to upgrade everything, the PC is fairly old, but i can't do that (Damn them for changing compatibility and forcing us to).

I have my eyes set on a Radeon 6870 or a Radeon 7850, with slightly lower max TDP consuption - i would want NOT to change the damn PSU.

My question to you is, would either the 6870 or 7850 be heavily bottlenecked by my config and the fact the MB supports only PCIe 2.0 or not? Should i go for it or not?

EDIT: the PC will be used for Gaming but in lower resolutions 19" standard non-wide LCD (for now at least) and i don't play very demanding games like Crysis

other than that the video cards are definitely able to play the games
