I need help choosing case fans. Currently I'm only running a single ML120 as rear exhaust, which is not doing a good job as far as noise since this is really a radiator fan.

I need three quiet 140mm fans to populate the rear exhaust and top exhaust of my case. My #1 would be bequiet silent wings 3 but they're expensive as hell. I need something less expensive. I'm fine with spending as much as two silent wings 3 140mm cost for three fans, so around 12-13 bucks for a piece.

are these good ?

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835709022

they're actually cheaper in Poland than they seem here, I can buy three for the price of two silent wings 3 140mm pwm.

There doesn't seem to be anyone testing fans anymore, so you'll just have to go by end user reviews and some guide lines. Almost all 120 mm fans will operate quietly up to ~1200 rpm and the same can be said of 140 mm fans up to ~1000 rpm. So that Phanteks fan might have to be slowed down a bit according to how quiet you want it to be. The other fan that I'd suggest is the Fractal Design Dynamic GP-14 Also, to save some money, you don't have to replace that ML120, just slow it down until the noise it makes is acceptable.

Edit: I have a pair of these and they do quite well Fractal Design Silent Series R2

they (the ml120s) don't seem to work well with gigabyte's pwm bios options. they often get stuck at 1600rpm even at the lowest pwm setting.

i have those phanteks, and if noise is a problem, you might not like them....their not super noisy, but louder than some. I like Scythe Kaze, or Scythe Grand flex, but those are probably more expensive than anything your going to find.....sadly "good" costs big $. im sure you can find some decent corsairs, or Noctuas for not too too much...

\maybe the followin *edit* i mistook the phanteks You posted for a different type i think, those look pretty decent. i think i was thinking of the 120mm ones

id bet fractals are pretty nice, and the beQuiets in the link above arent TOO pricey ($13) i dunno if its the same price in Your region.

Get Silent Wings 3 PWM (High Speed version). When you'll hold one, you'll know why they cost so much. The plastic is really heavy, it has rubberized everything, even the ring around the fan, dual set of mounts, one for screws, one for tool-less mounting with anti-vibration pieces.

Don't go Silent Wings 2. They aren't bad, but SW3 are more optimized and provide higher pressure and airflow at even lower noise. The rest are the usual plastic framed fans. They aren't bad, but they aren't exceptional. SW3 are.

i have those same phanteks in 120mm factor... they are silent low speed rad fans but i would not recommend them as exhaust case fans.

I'm torn now. SW3 have excellent specs, they move lots of air at decent pressure, and are only rated at 15.5dB  Fractal Design GP14X2 are less impressive but still very good, and they cost half what SW3 cost. The main difference is air pressure, 0.71 on FD vs 1.08 on SW3. Does air pressure matter for case exhaust ?

I just remembered I bought LP ddr3 like two months ago and I can put another NF-A15 on my D15S too. RIP my wallet, but it's better to do the cooling well once and for all times, especially when my D15S is gonna serve me a long time, definitely though any future CPU upgrades.

Not really, air pressure matters more if you use a radiator. although I have use SP fans for intake and non static pressure fans for exhaust and it worked out well for noise.

iirc, noctua and scythe used to be the quietest fans at mid-curve range speeds.

Still, the hands down best way to control noise with with a good fan controller, you can tame the high speed noisy-as-hell fans easy.

Also, fans don't ever become outdated and they are all standard dimensions. Meaning you pay really expensive fans once and you have them for years. So, don't skimp on them. You'll be able to move them from build to build, "saving" on fans is really the worst thing one can do. I'm not sure why no one thinks this way that this is a very long term investment and not something for 1 year.

Btw, Corsair also has really good fans that are usually well priced, check those out as well.

OK, I made my wish list

and I'm also bidding this great 200mm fan.

http://allegro.pl/show_item.php?item=6937251538&isPostBid=true&msg=Twoja+oferta+jest+w+tej+chwili+najwyższa!+Gratulujemy!&isBidValid=yes&msgtoken=2f4347ccb1c3c52b059c8864ea0f32ef38294f4a81a6d309b35aa1537440cb14

I think it's one of the few 200mm fans that doesn't suck. Others have lousy air pressure, 0.3-0.4, the one I have now barely pushes the air, when you put your hand behind the hdd case you barely feel anything, I think it rated of 0.25 static pressure.

I suggest you take High Speed version of Silent Wings 3 PWM 140mm. The reason for this is because in price, I think it's basically no difference, I think it was 1€ in my case, however with HS version, you can make some really high ventilation at 1600 RPM of HS version. But the fan is still capable of running at really low RPM without any problems making it inaudible (roughly 600-700 RPM), so you have option for best of both worlds. Really high airflow or really quiet operation in the same fan. Where with normal version, it might be lacking if you want to push a lot of air.

Btw, the HS version at top speed makes some noise, but the noise "profile" is really good, the noise is really not the annoying kind which is really nice.

I'd take your advice if only gigabyte was capable of making a bios pwm option capable of not sucking balls. Only way I can make it work is buy a silent 1000rpm fan and run it full speed. My current fans run at 1100-1200rpm when windows loads and they're pretty quiet, when I load a game they go to 1600-1700rpm (loud as hell) for no apparent reason, and to make it even worse they don't go back to 1200 rpm when I go back to idle. CPU fan works well though, it's sys_fan 1-3 that are flawed.

I can't say for Gigabyte, but ASUS and MSI both have good fan controls. ASUS had excellent presets of Full Speed, Normal and Quiet where MSI only has full user controlled curve, but has option to control the input temperature. I can set it to adjust all fans per CPU temperature or per SYS temperature. Difference being, CPU temp fluctuates much more. When full load, it can spin fans fast and when load is gone, fans will drop in speed instantly. Where with SYS temperature, readings come from case internals. Which means it'll ramp up slowly and run for longer until temps inside case go down. You have to compensate for lower temperatures, so the curve needs to be adjusted at a lot lower temperatures (usually only up to 50°C where CPU curve goes up to 85°C in my case). Check if Gigabyte by any chance offers this. Or if SYS 1-3 are automatically run by SYS temp and not CPU (or is controllable and you have to adjust it).

I find this useful because all my heat is generated on the intake, meaning all the heat is dumped inside the case. SYS sensor allows me to ramp up fans only when case internal temp raises and is independent of the CPU heat. Which is pretty neat.

I got one more question. If I replace my ML120 rear exhaust with other fan, it means it'll be unused. The second ML120 will stay as bottom intake on noctua LNA adapter. Is there a benefit from "sandwiching" intake fans, I mean placing one on top of the other ?

Any medium speed Yate Loon fans, any 140mm by Noiseblocker or silverstone AP fans though they might be a little noisey at full speed.

Get a fan controller to keep the fans quiet but fast enough to move decent amounts of air. I do this with my ML140 Pro's

If you have the clearance and the radiator has the holes or mounting clips, you might consider using the now "spare" 120mm on the
other side of your radiator to create a "push/pull" air flow through the radiator. May not be quieter, but might enhance cooling enough
that they can run at lower rpms.

It usually makes things worse because of vortexes and turbulences created in between. Stacking fans only makes sense when there is radiator in between which essentially kills the before mentioned vortexes and turbulences as it guides air between the radiator fins, so one is pushing air inside fin stack and another one is sucking air out, slightly improving performance.

On paper they're euqal to Fractal's GP-14 X2 but cost 10 monetary units /zloty,PLN/ more

I'll decide on the exhaust fans when I have darkforce 200mm already installed, but thanks for providing me with many options, having a wider choice is always good.

I'll have to see how loud the darkforce fan is, then it's either the 15.5db silentwings or the cheaper but louder fractal gp14. I think I'm gonna end up with fractals, there's no point in buying 15.5db fans if the front intake is rated for 20db. Still, darkforce 200mm is a very underrated fan as 200/230mm's are generally regarded as weak with their lousy air pressure. It's brand new and the bidding starts at 1PLN /0.28 your American monetary units/, no one else seems interested so I hope I might end up paying next to nothing for it and that would leave more cash for other fans making my choice wider.

thats likely the brand name expense ;) even though in my mind, fractal is a nicer brand than BeQuiet.... i dunno, the Fractal DP's i linked above were 12 or so dollars, so thats something like 40 Polish monetary credits. afaik

btw, the Fractal fans default to white on My Newegg page, but the black ones are also availabler, and cost the same (i like black over white Personally)

People need to realize that dB's mean very little actually. Noise profile however is important. The type of noise output. Low frequencies tend to be less annoying than high. Only problem here is, there is no standard way to measure this and pour it into text form. This is where all the grommets, ribs, bumps, cuts, rubberized surfaces and so forth shape the noise. Only way to really know it is to try it out. There is frankly no other easy way around this.

I think only way would be to create a "standardized" test of a fan frame with switchable restrictions. So you'd mount a fan inside a holding stand and run it at certain speeds without restrictions and with restrictions (normal case mesh, high restriction like HDD cages and heavy restriction like a cooling radiator). Then profile them by ear and maybe using audio spectrometer to map the frequencies. But to do that you'd need an anechoic chamber. Or at least proper studio room to do all this. This way you could test fans under identical conditions.

Totally agree. My last three MB's have been Asus, and their fan controls are just great. Though I like more creating my own fan profiles, but like you said, those presets are great in most cases.
