You can make any hard drive you already own an external one with this. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005B3VO24/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I get 200-240 MB/s transfer speeds with it on my 7200k HDD drives. That is all external drives are doing, using an adapter similar to that, just a cheaper 5400 rpm drive usually to rip you off $ wise.

I personally use hard drive cages, but the idea is just the same. There are very few situations where a true external drive is required ,and where a traditional internal drive (in a cage or set up as external), won't suffice just as well as an external. You just want to make sure the manner in which you turn the internal hard drive into external supports USB 3.0 or greater. It's always boggles my mind why someone would buy a hard drive that has only one purpose when you can take an internal drive which can be used either way and then buy a $10 cage, or adapter and get the exact same results often for far less Cost.

Of course there are situations where you need a drive to add to a laptop for travel, or similar. Those situations true external is always best, or at least more convenient

an 8tb external hdd will serve all your purposes just fine. it is not a security risk unluss somebody steals the harddrive or its traveling with you all the time. finally, i suggest you consider some of the options many of the members here have put forth in order to save money. if money is not a concern then get the hard drive that meets all your needs.

sense speed is not extremely important and space is, that drive will work just fine.

Hello mike3w3

The conventional wisdom by tech experts on backups is known as the 3-2-1 method.

Basically you want:

3 copies of any data you don't want to lose.
2 different mediums it's stored on (so 2 different drives in your computer, for example).
1 copy kept offsite, to prevent against disaster.

Now, you can use HDD's, CD's, Blue Ray, cloud etc...the medium is of your choosing but the important part is backing up your data the correct way.

Thank you for showing up, perhaps you can be a permenent member like @XFXSupport is, MSI had a rep here but he disappeared awhile ago. You might be able to assist the naysayers of Seagate Drives.

Mike, that drive doesn't seen very popular, may not be the most reliable model (priced as low as $159 on amazon) Theoretically, external hard drives should last many years, since they are usually not running, so wear is reduced, and fewer chances of lightning zapping it, since usually not connected. I have my music/movies backed up on 3 of them, 1 died, 2 still going (I forget the brand of the dead one, or why it died, the ones still alive are Seagate Goflex and WD Mybook). So it may be wise to go with the major brands.

You should go with Seagate or Western Digital if it's an important backup.
Paying a little more is important for important stuff ;P.
