Thanks to some advice from people on the graphics card forum, I upgraded earlier this week to a Radeon 4850 and new 650W PSU. However, I can only get 5500 points in 3dmark06 and I realise how severely my AMD64 3200+ s939 bottlenecks me.

I'm looking to upgrade, nothing too fancy but I know I need a new CPU, Mobo and Memory.

I'm looking at either Q6600 or E8400, any suggestions?

4GB of DDR2 800Mhz... think no arguments there.

The motherboard is where I need real help. I have two IDE dvd drives and two IDE hard disks and I see that most new motherboards don't have more than one IDE slot. Can you guys recommend a decent motherboard (standard overclocking abilities) that has two IDE slots?

    Thanks!

e8400 and i have a brand new set of red crucial ballistix tracers in 2x2gig 800mhz if you need em.

most new boards only have one ide controller and it's not even technically there... they use a secondary controller for it, hence the marvel, silicone image, etc chips on the newer boards.

i recomend a P45 board seeing how they are new, OC extremely well, are cheap... about $120 and up depending on how fancy you want to go.

i'd say go for some sata drives and scrap the ide's... sorry to say but they are part of your bottle neck.

How about the Asus P5KC or P5N? What does the P45 have over them?

I'm thinking of changing one hard disk for SATA.

p45 is honestly the best out right now. it can OC better then any other chipset and i can say that from extensive experience with almost every chipset in the past few years.

So the E8400 outdoes the Q6600 in games? How come most gfx reviews on the net use the Q6600 in their test setup?

e8400 can OC far better then a q6600. higher MHZ will outperform more cores in MOST situations.

everyone uses the q6600 in reviews because they are so readily available and a TON of people have them so more people can relate to the reviews.
