I have had a bad experience with the VF900cu, I put one on my X1950Xt and the temps got to 94C, and then my X1950XT died.

I REALLY dont think I would be abled to overclock my 3850 with a VF900.

No, I reaplied the thermalpaste like 3 times and got the same temps everytime. I was using AS5 and used less than a grain of rice to cover the whole core and it had perfect contact.

want a link to the thread here on TPU?

The surface could have been not flat. I'm telling you a VF900 would fit perfectly and cool it well. Not EVERY SINGLE VF900 comes with defects.

I would get one from these guys
    http://www.sharkacomputers.com/zavgaco.html
They have some cool colored ones as well.(and ramsinks)

one question then, would the VF900 not be good enough to cool a X1950XT? Other users said that it wasn't.

My guess is it came with an uneven surface or something silly like that.

My Akasa Vortexx NEO is brilliant too - not as good as an S1, about 5 degrees warmer on idle, but worth every penny and a few more degrees for the lower profile and lovely blue LED's.
