just grab a cheap biostar am2 board, sempy64 cpu(256k cache) 1-2gb ram and some 400gb seagate sata drives, would do perfect for you, also i may reccomend that you do torrent tracker insted of ftp as its more reliable and efficent, people wont rely on your bandwith alone but on eachother as well ^^(faster speeds+less load=more stuff shared)

if you are just running ftp you can safely go with the cheapest setup you can find. even a pentium 2 class computer can saturate a 10 megabits interface. since you may be running sata disks make sure you have enough sata ports if you plan on having a lot of storage

Agreed, the server won't require any processing power, simply enough options to connect your storage devices.
If you're hosting on the internet you won't even need high end I/O since you're limited by your internet connection. Even on the average LAN 100Mbit is the limit.
You could consider a simple RAID 5 setup though, to keep the data safe.

Software Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Workstation now migrated to W10 with regrets.
My recommendation is to go ULV mini-ITX silent. You can get a small form factor case, put one large HDD in there, and leave it on 24/7 at very lower power... but most importantly, without adding noise to your environment.

A ULV mini-ITX silent is NOT the faster thing on the block, but as previous posters have commented, if you are running a web server, or a LAN server with <10 users, then there is more than enough power there.

Don't get confused with all the articles about "power corporate servers". These things are running mailboxes for literally thousands of users, or running active web pages with thousands of concurrent connections.

Stick with something small and simple.

W1zzard mentioned using an old pentium 2 class computer. If you have something knocking around, then OK. But I don't recommend saving money buying a used P2 off ebay. The amount of time you will spend SETTING UP your server, and for the sake of compatibility with a modern OS and USB 2.0 specification, I recommend you use P3 or above.

Also take a look at Buffalo linkstation. This may have the features you require. It's not much bigger than a VHS cassette box, easily transportable, and connect to your LAN router. And it's ready-to-go straight out of the box. In our SOHO office we have two of these things running as fileservers. There are also hacks to these boxes so that they become LAN mediaservers or Linux web servers.

sweet , its good to know i can work with an average proc to get this up n running ...... thx a lot guys.

i think ill go torrent although its a lot more work to keep working trackers on link , but i'd rather have repeating and donating customers than the ones who wont come back of very slow bandwith .

yeah, and you can get decently easy tracker software if you ask around in say the utorrent forums, my advice is to requier a non abusive client list, utorrent,azerus(sp),classic/orignal bt, shareaza and some others dont cheat, bitcommet/bitlord and any clients based on them are suspect at best, many people us them because it allows them to cheat and get stuff without sharing much if anything :(

you could also use pub trackers and just use the server to seed stuff out, there are a few good anime trackers as well as a few decent simi-public trackers as well that allow anybody to upload a torrent ^^

Man I picked up an old Dell Poweredge 500sc server off eBay last year for 100 bucks all I added was a pci-x raid controller(40$) and a few hard drives(100$) and a giga LAN adapter(25$). Sure it’s no hot rod it’s a p3 1000
But it’s still faster than the internet it’s hooked up too. I use it as an ftp file server with 460 kbs cable my photo customers access their photos on it at decent speeds. Why a used server well it’s a server not a pc being used as one it has a server works chip set and pci-X and runs quite and reliably 7 days a week 365 a year 24 a day with very little down time. Why break your bank account this baby has saved me thousands of $$ in work

400bucks, i could make a new torrent/file server for less then that with far more space to boot.
