Using everest It says "Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M - High Definition Audio Controller [B-0] PCI" but searching google and I'm not coming across any driver for it, nor on the Intel website.

For OLDER Advent Laptops/Notebooks and most Advent PCs are made by 'Medion' a German firm. Their website supplies ALL drivers, utils etc for your laptop by the Medion (MD) model number. This you will find on the back of your laptop and will usually begin with a MD- reference (ignore the Advent model number crap).

Stick this model number, or your serial number if you're using a PC, in here: http://www1.medion.de/downloads/?lang=uk and it will list all the applicable drivers for your notebook.

For NEWER Advent Laptops/Notebooks a Tawainese company called ECS manufacturer the Notebooks. You will find the 'ECS' number on the back of your laptop, similar to ECS-G610 for example (thats the model number for the Advent 7091). This can then be used to search for relevent drivers/BIOS' etc here:

http://www.ecs.com.tw/

look to laptop if you see ECS-xxxx try Realtek driver ,ecs uses realtek sound 99.99% of time.

Since you are on W7, have you tried letting Windows Update find the driver? Might work, sometimes the simple ways work, lol.

EDIT: Ah, just realised its not the system in your specs....

in the device manager under the device that your trying to get drivers for, click properties > details. under the drop down menu select Hardware ID. post the string that you get under that.

Onboard audio is disabled in the BIOS ?
operating system ?

The BIOS is very very basic - Doesn't have the option.

in the device manager under the device that your trying to get drivers for, click properties > details. under the drop down menu select Hardware ID. post the string that you get under that.

Hmmm just got the laptop back to me, looked in the control panel there isn't even the "Sounds, Video and Game Controllers" option in the drop down - now to me this is saying there isn't even a sound device installed whatsoever... surely this isn't true, isn't the sound card built in/onboard in laptops?

What is the model number of the laptop?

Look under device manager and under sound devices; what is listed?
Sorta what Arrakis+9 posted.

I've downloaded both the AC97 & HD driver/software with no luck with either.

It might be trying to tell you it is, possibly, D.O.A. or defective. Anything is possible. But, at least you are getting help. And, everyone is trying.

Is that little speaker icon on your taskbar(crossed out or not)?

I'm PC-Myths, long story for getting a new account here but anyways...

Thanks to you all for your help on this, however the guy wanted the laptop back so didn't get time to do as much trying as I wanted. Just so you guys do know I did try the Intel site, and ALL the others you suggested, I've kind of come to the conclusion that it had been tampered with before in the past so therefore is never going to work again.
