i was asked to go look at an old dell computer (about 7-8 years old)

the problem is they bought a new printer for it (i dont know what type of printer it is) but they said it wont work on that computer but it does work on the other computer they have that is newer and uses win xp. they also said that the drivers wont load from the cd, they put the cd in and nothing happens. thats all the info they gave me lol.

now i havent got to look at it yet (will look at it in the morning) but the question i have is there any reason the new printer shouldnt run in win98? they were told by a few people the computer was just too old to run the new printer but none of these people are qualified techs just do gooders looking at it. first thing to check is if cd player still works lol.

by the way this is two different offices with seperate computers and files so no shared connections through a network, this must be stand alone computer and printer.

    questions:

    1) is there any reason a new printer would be unable to run on win98?

    2) is it possible the new printers driver cd is just not compatible with the older cd player?

    3) assuming its just a driver issue, is there a generic driver i could use to run the printer on win98?

i wont know what kind of 98 it is until tomorrow but im sure it must be WIN98SE standard edition because its a church organization (knights of columbus) so they would have picked it up at a retail outlet store and not have anything commercial built.

they connected the printer to the other computer with xp in the other office and it worked so without knowing any more i wanted to rule out 98 being incompatible, is it? could it be?

as for the usb, again i dont know but its something to look into, didnt they change the standard size for usb power? how can i check to see the specs on the usb and if the drivers are there?

go under device manager to see if there is USB info if theres not you will have to find some USB drivers. as for incompatability it shouldnt be an issue if you look on the HP website though it will tell you

well the only thing i remember about win98 is most if not all programs for it wouldnt run on xp but i never heard of it going the other way.

my guess is the cd player is so old it cant read the newer faster cd the printer came with, im bringing a spare cd player just in case.

    UPDATE:

i replaced a bad cd drive and thats being recognized and is working now but the printers cd locks up windows 98

it goes to bsod showing fatal error OS anytime i try to open the disk.

i found two generic drivers for windows 98 and it had two versions, one for FE first edition and another for SE second edition.

when i tried to install the se version from floppy it said it was for the wrong version so even though it was SE i tried the FE driver and naturally it said no FE version found.

any ideas how to get this printer working? it is not even recognized under "my computer" but that mat be because its a usb device.

the printer is a HP 2110 Deskjet all in one multi printer and i need a driver for it to run on Windows 98 SE
